Community Highlights: Meet Courtney Suddath of Sycamore Family Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Suddath.

Hi Courtney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Helping people has always felt like what I wanted to do. I didn’t always know what it would look like, but I’ve followed the doors that opened and the people placed in my path, and each step has led me closer to the work I love today.
I grew up in a home where service was modeled to me, my mom was a teacher, and my dad was a teacher and coach. Watching them make a difference in the lives of others made a lasting impression on me. I earned my undergraduate degree in psychology from Texas Tech, and quickly realized the next step would be graduate school. It took a little exploring, but eventually I found the direction that felt right.
I completed my master’s degree in psychology at Houston Baptist University, where I was impacted by professors and peers who helped shape my path. After graduation, I began working in a local public school district as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology. Then after that, I worked at The Parish School as the Director of Admissions and Family Services, and that is where I really found my heart for working with kids who have difficulty fitting into traditional systems, especially those with special needs or on the autism spectrum. I’ve always been drawn to the kids who just need someone to really see them and believe in them.
Over time, I stepped into leadership roles and eventually moved into community-based counseling. I spent more than a decade at a nonprofit counseling center, Cy-Hope Counseling, serving individuals and families and later stepping into the role of Clinical Director. That experience deepened my commitment to making high-quality, compassionate care accessible to anyone who needs it.
In January 2025, I opened Sycamore Family Counseling in Cypress. This practice reflects everything I’ve learned along the way and allows me to show up fully for the people and families I work with. I specialize in anxiety, depression, neurodiversity, parenting support, school-related challenges, women’s issues and overall family dynamics. I also love supervising LPC-Associates and helping shape the next generation of counselors.
Looking back, none of it was perfectly mapped out, but I can clearly see how every part of the journey brought me right where I’m supposed to be. And for that, I’m deeply grateful.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but I don’t think any meaningful path really is.
There have been plenty of bumps along the way, times I wasn’t sure what the next step should be, moments where I wondered if I was doing the right thing, or if it was all going to work out. Starting over in a new role, leaving places I loved, stepping into leadership, and eventually opening my own practice, none of that came without stress, sacrifice, or a little fear.
One of the hardest things has been learning how to carry the emotional weight of this work. When walking alongside people through really hard seasons of their lives, it is a complete honor and privilege to be with them, and at the same time it can stay with you. Over the years, I’ve had to figure out how to hold space for others without losing sight of my own well-being, which, honestly, is still something I have to be mindful of. I really come to sincerely care for my clients.
At the same time, often the balance of challenges and successes are what have shaped me. They’ve made me more grounded, more compassionate, and more certain that I’m doing what I’m meant to do. It hasn’t always been smooth, but I’m grateful for the road I’ve taken.

We’ve been impressed with Sycamore Family Counseling, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Sycamore Family Counseling, I provide individualized, compassionate therapy for women, children, teens, and families. Whether someone is facing anxiety, school stress, life transitions, or parenting challenges, my goal is always to meet them where they are, with care, clinical expertise, and genuine connection.
I work with women, children, teens, and families who are navigating a wide range of challenges. Many of the women I see are experiencing anxiety, overwhelm, or life transitions, and are simply looking for a safe space to process and reset. With children and teens, I use a combination of play and talk therapy to help them express big emotions, build resilience, and grow in confidence. I also support families, helping parents strengthen communication, deepen connection, and navigate difficult seasons together. I have a particular passion for working with neurodivergent clients, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental differences, and I strive to create a space where they feel fully seen and supported. In addition to my clinical work, I provide supervision for LPC-Associates, and truly enjoy helping new counselors grow into their own unique voice and style as clinicians.
Sycamore Family Counseling is intentionally small, just me for now, and I am enjoying the freedom, time and space to give all of my attention to my clients. Clients get consistency from the first email to the ongoing work we do in session, it’s a personal, one-on-one relationship built on trust. My office space in Cypress is warm, private, and designed to feel calm and safe, because I believe the environment matters just as much as the therapy itself.
I am proud that the heart of my brand is connection. Whether I’m working with a child in the playroom, supporting a parent through a tough season, or supervising a new counselor, the relationship always comes first. I take pride in creating a space where people feel known, respected, and supported, never rushed, never just a number.
I want readers to know that I offer both in-person sessions at my Cypress office and virtual therapy for those who need the convenience of telehealth. Sessions are 45 minutes, and while I am private pay, I do provide superbills for clients who want to use their out-of-network benefits. With over 20 years of experience in the mental health field, I bring not just clinical knowledge, but also warmth, curiosity, and genuine compassion to each session. Sycamore Family Counseling is built on the belief that therapy should feel human, not clinical. It’s a space where people can breathe, reset, grow, and feel deeply supported.
Sycamore Family Counseling is a solo practice built on heart, professionalism, and the belief that people thrive when they feel safe, heard, and understood. This is the work I love and I’m honored every time someone lets me be part of their journey.
