Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Shaftel.
Hi Danny, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In my entire life, I have been in or around the jewelry and gemstone industry. My father started the business in 1978 as an importer and wholesaler of fine diamonds, natural gemstones and fine jewelry. I remember hearing stories of his travels and business deals with some of the most interesting people in the industry and it always grabbed my attention. After graduating from the University of Colorado Boulder, I decided to join the business full time. At the beginning, we were on the ground floor of a wholesale jewelry building here in Houston where we were able to strategically grow the retail division of our business to become one of Houston’s premier fine jewelry and engagement ring stores, recognized city-wide and beyond for our craftsmanship, customer service and true-to-market pricing. Throughout the years, we have been able to work with several famous Hollywood actors and actresses, receive several accolades and awards, and on November 13 2020, during the height of the pandemic, we opened the doors of our new Tanglewood location.
As GIA-trained gemologists, we truly understand the science behind the gemstones and are able to intelligently guide our clients toward the gemstone and jewelry that is the best match for their style and budget. Simply put, we have fun with our work and I believe it shows.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If you’re an entrepreneur and you’re accustomed to smooth roads, then you’re not truly an entrepreneur. There is a new challenge every day and certainly new significant challenges at least monthly. In a family business, one challenge is actually working side-by-side with family every day. On the one hand, we can speak openly about the good, the bad and the ugly. However, on the other hand, when stress is high, emotions tend to fly. Also, specifically in this industry, theft is always a concern. While we do have very tight inventory controls, we have had a couple of instances of theft that really stung. While I can’t reveal too many details for the sake of security, when the last theft took place, it forced us to completely overhaul our inventory tracking system and protocols so that we have a much quicker and more accurate way to control our inventory.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Although I do quite a few TV appearances and on-stage presentations, I have always been a pretty shy person. Over the years, I have managed to get past this stage fright and now I enjoy these opportunities as they come.
