Community Highlights: Meet Dawn-Petrice Youngs of Youngs Counseling, PLLC; Neurofeedback of Cypress, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn-Petrice Youngs.

Hi Dawn-Petrice, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My career and life have been shaped by rich experiences that inform my empathetic approach to therapy. Before becoming a counselor, I worked as a special education teacher and high school counselor, where I honed my skills in supporting children and adolescents with unique learning and behavioral challenges. These roles deepened my passion for advocating for neurodivergent individuals, including those with ADHD (like me, as well as my husband and children), and related conditions.

Beyond the classroom, I’ve worn many hats: I am a wife of 25 years to a commercial airline pilot (who is also a former sworn LEO—a career in which we experienced a ‘critical incident’ within the first 13 months of marriage), and a proud mother of three adult children with ADHD. These personal roles have given me unique insight into the struggles—and triumphs—of balancing high-stakes careers, parenting neurodivergent children, and pursuing personal growth.

I understand firsthand the complexities of striving for perfection while juggling professional and family demands. As a self-admitted “recovering perfectionist,” I know the toll it can take on mental health. My experiences inform my compassionate, down-to-earth approach to helping others break free from perfectionism, manage stress, and embrace their authentic selves.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not! I went to college to pursue a career in the health industry obtaining two bachelors–one in health and the other in business. I THOUGHT I’d end up as a hospital or practice administrator, but after 7 months in the industry, it became clear that I was better fit to be on the front line. I went back to school to become a teacher where I ended up teaching special education and biology. But again, it wasn’t enough, so I went back to school form my master’s in counseling. I became a school counselor for well over 8 years and then transitioned into private practice. I found bio and neurofeedback as a part of my commitment to a more natural and holistic approach to mental health.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Youngs Counseling, PLLC; Neurofeedback of Cypress, LLC?
Often in the role as a school counselor, I was limited in the amount of time I could dedicate to my students. By opening Youngs Counseling, PLLC in 2016, I was able to assist the community better via a private practice setting. Now I’m able to give clients my uninterrupted attention thereby naturally creating a more secure and stable relationship in which they can open up and begin to address their underlying concerns. In 2021 in the aftermath of COVID, I saw a need for more counselors with a broader, more integrative approach to mental health. In response, I began supervising interns and associates allowing me to return to teaching and subsequently benefiting the community by bringing in quality professionals with the same holistic approach that Youngs Counseling, PLLC has become known for.

As a way to bring more alternative approaches to the Cypress, Texas community, I expanded in 2022 by opening Neurofeedback of Cypress, LLC which offers qEEGs and EEG-driven neurofeedback to individuals looking for a non-invasive, drug-free approach to their mental health as well as their peak performance needs. Neurofeedback is an amazing alternative for those who are averse to medications and tried counseling, or other methods, without success. I found neurofeedback as a last-ditch effort to assist my own families’ struggles–it was a lifesaver and something I wanted to be able to offer others who are struggling!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memories are all about being outdoors! I was raised, and currently live, on my family’s farm, so my favorite memories are of camping, sleeping under the stars, helping my dad with the animals, and going to the local livestock shows.
