Hi Donisha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my business after my third layoff when I realized it was time to take control of my future. What began in 2018 was more than just a way to earn a living — it was about creating stability for my family and using my skills to support other small business owners who often don’t have access to reliable financial guidance. My goal has always been to help them grow with confidence, knowing their books are in good hands.
Wright Bookkeeping & Financial Services provides bookkeeping, payroll, and tax services to small business owners — especially minority and women-owned businesses. I help entrepreneurs stay financially organized, compliant, and confident by handling the numbers so they can focus on growing their business. My mission is to be a trusted financial partner, offering clarity, peace of mind, and support every step of the way.
The journey hasn’t been smooth. After I accepted a position with the IRS, I was required to let go of all my bookkeeping clients because of a conflict of interest — something I wasn’t told until after I started. Not long after, I was let go myself due to administrative changes under the Trump administration. It was frustrating and discouraging, but it was also the push I needed to return to what I was truly meant to do.
The most meaningful part of rebuilding has been having my former clients reach out and ask to return. Their loyalty and trust reminded me that this business was never just about bookkeeping — it was about relationships, reliability, and making small business owners feel supported and empowered.
In September 2025, I hosted the Grand Reopening of Wright Bookkeeping & Financial Services. That moment was more than a ribbon-cutting — it was a celebration of resilience and a revival of my original mission. Today, I run my business with renewed focus, deep empathy, and a clear sense of purpose: to lift up small business owners, especially those who are often overlooked, and give them the tools and confidence to succeed.
My story is proof that setbacks don’t define you. They redirect you — and sometimes, they lead you exactly where you were always meant to be.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles along the way has been finding consistent, long-term clients. In the early days, I often felt like I was starting over every few months, constantly looking for the next contract or referral. Building stability in this industry takes time, patience, and a lot of networking.
I’ve also learned that not every client is the right fit. I once worked with a client who was openly rude and dismissive, no matter how hard I tried to provide professional service. Eventually, I had to make the tough decision to terminate our agreement. At the time, it felt like a loss — but it turned out to be one of the best business decisions I’ve made. It reminded me that I don’t have to tolerate disrespect to keep my business alive. Protecting my peace and focusing on clients who value my expertise has allowed me to serve my community better and build stronger, healthier relationships.
Those challenges — inconsistent clients and difficult personalities — have shaped how I approach my business today. I’m more intentional about who I work with, and I’ve built systems to attract clients who truly need and appreciate the value I provide.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Wright Bookkeeping & Financial Services, LLC?
Wright Bookkeeping & Financial Services is more than just an accounting firm — it’s a trusted partner for small business owners who need clarity, confidence, and peace of mind when it comes to their finances. We provide bookkeeping, payroll, and tax services, with a special focus on supporting minority and women-owned businesses. My goal has always been to take the stress out of numbers so entrepreneurs can focus on what they do best — growing their business.
What sets us apart is the way we serve. I know firsthand the challenges of instability and uncertainty, and I’ve built my business on resilience, empathy, and purpose. I don’t just “do the books.” I take the time to educate my clients, communicate clearly, and provide personalized support so they feel empowered, not overwhelmed. Many of my clients tell me they trust me because I make finances simple and relatable — and that’s exactly what I strive for.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the evolution of our identity. Wright Bookkeeping has grown into something recognizable in the community, and recently we’ve introduced a new superhero brand character — the Bookkeeping Hero. She represents strength, clarity, and financial empowerment, and she’s become a symbol of how we fight “financial chaos” alongside our clients. This superhero branding has also inspired a new financial literacy series I’m developing called Money Heroes. The series uses comic-style storytelling, activities, and humor to teach kids, teens, and adults about money in a way that’s fun and engaging.
If there’s one thing I want readers to know, it’s that Wright Bookkeeping & Financial Services is here to walk alongside small business owners. Whether it’s cleaning up the books, navigating payroll, or preparing for tax season, we provide reliable services with the heart of a true partner. For us, it’s not just about numbers — it’s about helping businesses thrive today while building a legacy of financial strength and literacy for tomorrow.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about our city is that there’s always something to do. From cultural events and festivals to small business markets and community gatherings, there’s an energy here that makes it easy to stay connected and inspired. I appreciate how diverse the city is and how many opportunities there are to learn, grow, and be part of something bigger.
What I like least? The traffic — hands down. Getting from one side of town to the other can sometimes feel like a full-time job! But even with the traffic, the city’s energy and opportunities make it worth navigating.
