Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Glenda Demas.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am Dr. Glenda Demas, a native Houstonian licensed professional counselor and health psychologist, a National Board-Certified Counselor licensed in Texas, Georgia, Florida, and Louisiana. I have had the pleasure to appear on Isiah Factor Uncensored as a Mental Health Expert, KPRC 2, and hold a current seat as a Member of the Board for NAMI-Greater Houston. I am also a member of several professional associations within the states that I service and have been in private practice for 10 years, specializing in Anxiety, Trauma, Stress-Related Disorders, Conflict Resolution, Crisis Intervention, and Anger Management. I have plans to expand my practice to Mississippi and California.
I founded Mynd Your Mental Foundation, a non-profit promoting mental health education and advocacy. During Covid-19, I provided webinars and group mental health sessions through my foundation and was chosen as the face of the Boris L. Henson Foundation for their “Let’s Talk” free virtual therapy campaign founded by Taraji P. Henson.
In 2021, I launched Pearls of Change Realty group, aiming to provide affordable housing for Veterans with mental health conditions. I was recognized in 2021 as one of 30 Influential Women of Houston and as a top Mental Health Professional in Texas and Katy in 2023. I recently launched the MyMynDMyMental wellness app, offering a wellness community and support outside of the traditional therapy settings.
I pledge my dedication to the neuroscience profession by continuously expanding my experience through education and research and working actively to remove the stigma associated with mental health.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course anything surrounding Mental Health is a challenge to discuss. The main obstacle working in my field of study is helping the community to understand the importance of having good mental health. There is such a huge stigma surrounding mental health management, especially within the workplace. Many individuals struggle in silence for fear of being judged. Working to remove the stigma associated with mental health has been a continued challenge. I have made a pledge to see be removed and more normalized. Placing myself in the right environments to have healthy conversations surrounding the topic has become a lot easier on this journey.
We’ve been impressed with Pearls of Change Wellness, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Health Psychologist. In addition, I focus on Trauma Informed Care. I help my clients understand the congruency between their physical and mental well being. I aim to provide psychoeducation to show how psychological, behavioral, and cultural factors contribute to physical health and illness. In addition, how psychological factors can directky negatively impact health.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I am a native Houstonian. I am all things Houston! Houston Rockets, Houston Astros, Houston Dynamo, Houston Texans, Houston Dash, Houston Symphony and DJ Screw.
I am also a foodie, and I love that we have so many food options to choose from. Whether you like Sushi, Steak, American, or Traditional Cuisine, we offer so many options. It’s like a new restaurant popping up every week. We also have some of the best entertainment and shopping.
My least attractive thing about Houston is the traffic. Traffic has become horrible. For those looking to move to Houston, check out Austin!
