Ellen, Marquita & Monique

Hi Ellen, Marquita, & Monique, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Brown Girl Society started when 3 African American women entrepreneurs desired a safe space community for the fasting growing demographics of entrepreneurs in the USA Black women. Black women face disproportionate financial headwinds, a lack of access to capital, a lack of partnerships, lack of supports, and lack of mental health support as an entrepreneur. Therefore, the Brown Girl Society was created to help solve this problem. Brown Girl Society is a digital platform dedicated to empower and inspire women through Education, Networking, and Advocacy for our businesses. Our goal is to create a community amongst Brown Business-Centered Women globally through our members-only safe space for “Brown Girls” to find sisterhood, support, networking, and advocacy so they’re ahead of the curve in business.

Today, we got to where we are with partnerships and building a community aligned to our mission.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
All entrepreneurs have bumps along the road, and they are expected. The struggles along the way have been developing an easy and user-friendly digital platform that can connect all our society members. A digital platform is essential to keep our community safe and focused on addressing the concerns of Black women entrepreneurs. Currently, we are vetting and partnering with Application development companies to make sure that our platform is as accommodating as possible for our community.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Brown Girl Society is a digital platform dedicated to empower and inspire women through Education, Networking, and Advocacy for our Black women businesses. Globally, BGS has an international app that allows its members to support our Brown Girl collectives’ business events, products, mission, and audiences to grow their “Brown Girl” businesses together. The Brown Girl Society app provides the following:

On the Brown Girl Society app, we create a network of 500 Brown Business girls who are committed to growing their business in the US and across the world.

On the Brown Girl Society app, we have 1:1 advocacy services ranging from legal to mental health service providers to provide the necessary advocacy supports that Brown Business Girls need for their business to thrive.

On the Brown Girl Society app, we have 3 different education and coaching opportunities for Brown Girls through podcasts, business development sessions, and e-guide books on business development.

As Brown Girls network with each other they acquire grant points towards earning business grants for their business.

On the Brown Girl Society app, we inspire Brown girls to network with our support and earn funds incentive which provides capital funding to BGS members who actively support each other. The funding encourages consistent networking, partnering, and connections between members.

The problem Brown Girl Society attempts help solve the lack of access to capital, lack of support, lack of advocacy and development for their businesses. Statistically, 61% of Brown/Black women entrepreneurs are self-funding their startup capital because Black women find it difficult to get funding elsewhere. The narrative of an S.B.W. (strong black woman) and, more recently as the ‘Black Superwoman Syndrome is hurting and even killing our black women; therefore, black women are more than 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problem. Lastly, the venture capital funding for US female-only founders’ teams is only 2%.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
We like the entrepreneurial spirit that Houston encourages for everyone to start their business, grow their passions and live their dreams

Unfortunately, what we like least about Houston is the lack of access of public transportation within and around the city
