Today we’d like to introduce you to Flori Meeks Hatchett.
Hi Flori, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Copybrighters LLC, a writing and editing agency, got its official start in March 2024, but the idea to develop it goes back four or five years. After more than two decades as a freelance writer, I wanted to move from solopreneurship to building a company, one that could provide clients with writing and editing teams while also creating opportunities for other freelancers.
My husband, Jerry Hatchett, an entrepreneur himself, encouraged me to take the leap and has been my constant sounding board ever since. I also began brainstorming with my close friend, Barbara Adams, a fellow freelance writer and ghostwriter. Barbara suggested the name Copybrighters, recruited a graphic designer for our logo, and agreed to join me as a writer/editor.
From the beginning, we knew we wanted to focus on serving businesses and nonprofits, with nonfiction ghostwriting as our specialty. Ghostwriting is one of my favorite things to do — it combines my background as a newspaper features writer with a deeper kind of storytelling. Helping people share their stories in their own voices is so rewarding.
Our extensive experience was a clear differentiator. At first, I worried about drawing attention to being “seasoned,” since the business world doesn’t always value maturity. But I came to see that our years in journalism, marketing, and PR, combined with ongoing learning, would be a real strength for our clients.
Once we made those big-picture decisions about how to approach and market our company, we got to work on getting a foundation in place. With technical support from Jerry and content input from Barbara, I developed Copybrighters’ website. We became an official LLC and started building a social media presence.
We also launched a blog series, The Spotlight™, which profiles inspiring and innovative people from the business and nonprofit worlds. It can be tricky to showcase ghostwriting work; ghostwriters work behind the scenes. This blog series lets us demonstrate our writing skills while helping others get the word out about their organizations.
One of our most meaningful projects so far has been helping Barbara publicize her children’s book series about Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), inspired by her son’s survival of this rare cancer. Barbara is now working with the Histiocytosis Foundation to raise enough money to provide the books at no cost to families impacted by LCH. And now, we’re starting to get more business for both writing and editing support. I’m optimistic about bringing in even more experienced writers and editors to grow with us.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One real challenge has been finding enough hours in the day for all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into launching and growing a business: the things I want to learn, implement, and improve, from web enhancements to new blog ideas. But I know that wearing many hats comes with the territory when you’re an entrepreneur, and honestly, it’s an exciting problem to have.
Timing has been another challenge. We launched Copybrighters right around the time language-based AI models were transforming our industry. I remember attending a networking meeting, sharing about the company and repeatedly hearing, “Oh, I use AI to do my company’s writing.” On the bright side, when I mentioned that we specialize in nonfiction ghostwriting, people’s eyes lit up. Many of the business owners there told me they dreamed of writing a book. And the ability to capture clients’ unique voices in a book is a specialized, human skill that AI can’t replicate.
Also, AI has created new opportunities for us. Some clients now hire us to edit and humanize content they’ve drafted with AI. And we’ve found AI can be a helpful research tool, so long as we take time to double-check details and remain mindful of the risk of “hallucinations.”
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Copybrighters is a Texas-based writing and editing agency. We offer a full range of services for businesses and nonprofits and specialize in nonfiction ghostwriting. Our team has ghostwritten and edited autobiographies, family histories, business books, company and nonprofit histories, and books about the energy industry. We love helping clients share their stories and connect with their audiences, whether through books, blogs, press releases, or case studies.
What sets us apart is the combination of experience and heart we bring to every assignment. With decades of work in journalism, ghostwriting, and marketing, our team knows how to shape content that’s not only polished but also authentic.
We’re especially proud of The Spotlight™, our blog series profiling inspiring entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders, which reflects our commitment to storytelling.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I spent a lot of time at my paternal grandparents’ house in Detroit as a girl, and my grandfather was one of my first and closest friends. He talked to me as though I were an adult; he never talked down to me. He shared stories about losing his mother at a young age, coming to America from Poland, and serving in the Army shortly after World War I. He also taught me how to cook and how to play poker. I’m extremely grateful for those times.
