Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwendolyn Harper.
Hi Gwendolyn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began along the shores of my hometown with Galveston ISD, where I first learned that education is less about textbooks and more about heart work. Even then, I understood that my calling was not simply to teach, but to build what I call community ships, strong and unbreakable systems of support that carry families and children toward a brighter future.
That passion for meaningful impact led me to the fast paced world of Houston ISD. For the next 36 years, I devoted myself to school administration. I led large campuses, mentored hundreds of educators, and worked tirelessly to create cultures where every student felt seen, valued, and capable of excellence. Yet after nearly four decades of leadership, I felt a profound pull to return to where the foundation is first laid, at the very beginning of a child’s educational journey.
Inspired by a vision of village style learning, I made the courageous decision to step away from my administrative post and bring that vision to life. I founded Harper Academy for Young Scholars as more than a childcare center. It is an innovative learning sanctuary where young scholars experience accelerated academic and social growth through a thoughtful blend of rigorous instruction and purposeful play.
Today, I pour my experience, passion, and leadership into this academy every single day. Each child who walks through our doors is met with care, dignity, and high expectations. At Harper Academy for Young Scholars, we are not just preparing children for school. We are building confident learners, strengthening families, and shaping futures.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I have always believed that the best lessons are learned in the middle of the struggle. Leaving a secure, lifelong career in education administration was one of the scariest leaps I have ever taken. There were plenty of long nights spent wondering if I was making the right move, navigating the steep and often humbling learning curve of transitioning from a district leader to a first-time small business owner.
The biggest challenge was moving from the established systems of Houston ISD to building something from the ground up. Suddenly, I wasn’t just managing a campus; I was navigating licensing, hunting for the perfect physical space, and ensuring every tiny detail of Harper Academy lived up to the high vision in my head. It required a level of grit I hadn’t tapped into in years.
There were moments of genuine doubt and physical exhaustion, but every time I saw a child’s face or felt the growing support of the community, I knew I was exactly where I was supposed to be. Looking back, those hurdles weren’t just obstacles. They were the very things that forced me to strengthen the foundation of this academy and prove to myself that the village I wanted to build was worth the fight.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Harper Academy for Young Scholars, we are more than a daycare; we are a specialized early learning environment where academic excellence meets the warmth of a community. Having spent 36 years in education, I built this academy to bridge the gap between traditional childcare and the high standards of a formal educational setting. We specialize in early childhood development that focuses on the whole child, ensuring that our young scholars are socially confident, emotionally resilient, and academically prepared for the road ahead.
What sets us apart is the unique perspective I bring from the district leadership level. I know exactly what skills children need to thrive when they eventually enter the K through 12 system, and we integrate those foundational blocks into our daily activities. We are known for our village style approach to learning, where families are active participants in the journey and every child receives personalized attention from educators who truly care about their “heart-work.”
Brand wise, I am most proud of the culture of excellence and respect we have cultivated. When parents walk through our doors, they don’t just see a facility; they feel a sanctuary. I am proud that Harper Academy has become a name synonymous with trust and high-level preparation. I want readers to know that when they choose us, they are choosing a program rooted in four decades of educational expertise. We offer a nurturing space where curiosity is celebrated, and every scholar is given the world-class start they deserve to become the leaders of tomorrow.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Building a dream like Harper Academy for Young Scholars was never a solo mission, and I am the first to say that my success is a reflection of the incredible people who stood by me. First and foremost, my family has been my greatest source of strength. They were my cheerleaders during those long nights of transition, offering the emotional support and encouragement I needed to keep going when things felt overwhelming. Their belief in my vision gave me the courage to walk away from a forty-year career and start this new chapter with confidence.
I also owe a debt of gratitude to the mentors and colleagues I worked alongside during my years at Houston ISD and Galveston ISD. These educators and leaders challenged me to grow and helped me sharpen the administrative skills that now serve as the backbone of my business. They were my advocates, pushing me to lead with excellence and teaching me that true leadership is about serving others.
Lastly, I have to give credit to the parents and the Katy community who took a chance on us from day one. Our first clients weren’t just customers; they were partners who helped us build those “community-ships” I value so much. Their trust and word of mouth recommendations have been the heartbeat of our growth. Every teacher and staff member at Harper Academy also plays a vital role, as they are the ones on the ground every day, pouring their love and expertise into our scholars. This academy is the result of a collective effort, and I am honored to share this success with everyone who has played a part in our journey.
