Today we’d like to introduce you to Hayley Kenner
Hi Hayley, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
From an early age, I knew that I wanted to work with dogs. I grew up with a rescue dog that had some behavioral challenges which inspired me to learn as much as I could about training. Right out of high school, I enrolled into a dog training apprentice program and it quickly became evident that I was going to commit to this career path. I went on to work at several premiere training facilities in Houston to study under other trainers. I eventually gained the education and credentials to specialize in fear and reactivity, which are big passions of mine. After nearly a decade of experience and success with hundreds of dogs, I came across an opportunity to start a training business of my very own in 2021. After a few years of getting off the ground, I now own Revival Dog Training and its 2 locations with my business partner and colleague of 9 years, Yennifer Mejia. Revival Dog Training is located in The Heights and West University neighborhoods of Houston, and soon to be New York City.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The first couple years were most challenging. I had to become confident and comfortable with managing 12 people. I was 28 years old and now responsible for the livelihoods of others, and I had all these new expenses to juggle. I was vulnerable; I was creating this new thing and putting it out there to the world. I’d say that starting a business is about as soul-baring as it gets. It can be a rollercoaster at times. If you have a business, you understand the emotional fluctuations that come with the journey. Your wellbeing now hinges on things going well with it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We understand that every dog is an individual with their own unique needs. One aspect of dogs that is indistinguishable is the way they learn, which is universal with animals of all species. This means that every dog, regardless of temperament, breed, or age, has the capability for behavior change. This is why our Day Training and Board and Train programs are fully customizable to address specific challenges and goals. From lunging on-leash at Memorial Park to potty training in a downtown high-rise, we want you and your dog to live a life that works for the both of you, together. We are here to help the modern-day dog owners of Houston navigate life with their urban dwelling companions. We believe that dog ownership is a lifestyle, and we can show you just how fulfilling it is.
All of our programs are exclusively designed for any dog with their own behavioral health needs. We offer Day Training, Board and Train, Private Lessons, Group Classes, Daycare, and Boarding.
What were you like growing up?
I was obsessed with all animals, big and small. I regarded animals of any species worthy of adoration and respect. I wanted to know as many facts about them as possible, and as a young girl I was either tuned into Animal Planet or somewhere outdoors barefoot with a bug-catching net. Much to the dismay of my parents, the list of different animals we had growing up was quite extensive. Of course, dogs were always my favorite, and I fantasized about having one until our family dog, Jessie, came into the picture. My world forever changed because of that dog.
