Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaclyn Streit
Jaclyn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
A native New Yorker with aspirations of always being an artist. I studied design and dance throughout high school. Interests evolved into studies of hospitality and psychology in college.
After years of managing in fine dining and resorts, I felt a need to live a little easier with friends in sunny South Florida.
I always found space to be creative in my own unique way. The call to teach yoga found me at a unique time when I felt everything was falling apart here in Houston and really it was just something better coming together. Movement has always been my medicine.
Vinyasa yoga is the dance of breath to movement.
It’s incredibly rewarding to curate impactful experiences for various bodies through mindfully timed music and intelligent sequencing. The connection felt through the practice and the community is unparalleled to anything else.
When Jenn Bianco approached me to assist in the creation of a luxurious place that provides extra space to practice with the most incredible team and spa amenities, of course the answer was where do I sign?
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was definitely not the smoothest road to where I am now. I fell in love with the quote “ruin is the road to transformation” by Elizabeth Gilbert when I read Eat, Pray, Love one summer in college. It has become my mantra.
I was asked by a friend to assist with the service program at an upscale restaurant here in Houston, while I lived in South Florida at the time. She had made financial promises to get me here and they didn’t quite work out leaving me in a difficult position. I had already subleased my place to another friend of mine and made the best of the situation while I was here for a summer.
Whenever I’m feeling low, I have the urge for physical movement and creativity. There was a yoga studio a few blocks away from where I was renting in the Houston Heights and decided to check it out. I ended up going so frequently that the owner asked if I’d like to teach there and I said I’d need a training.
I found Black Swan Yoga and Joy Yoga not too long after that. I began as a Karma Yogi at BSY and ended up signing up for my teacher training at Joy Yoga. Both places ended up hiring me and have fostered my growth.
It may have been a rocky start, but the supportive community that surrounds me to this day makes me feel the only way is up from here.
