Community Highlights: Meet James Marshall of Marshall Wealth Management, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Marshall.

James, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Louisville, KY, and I went to Western Kentuck University to study Architecture and Real Estate Investment Management; Circumstances lead me to delay the completion of my studies for two years while I enter the US Army to get the funding I needed to finish school. When I returned back to WKU and completed my studies. I started a job as a Highway Engineer Technician, and later a District Affirmative Action Officer. This job put me in front of several civic leaders in Louisville, Bowling Green, Elizabethtown and surrounding counties. One day back in 1988, one of those civic leaders; Arthur Williams, Present of the Louisville Urban League, called to inform me that Merrill Lynch was interested in hiring new Stockbrokers. He remembered a conversation we had about my interest in the stock market, and he thought I would be a good fit for the position. I interviewed, got hired and I’m still in the industry over 37 years later.
After spending approx. 15 years learning and growing with Merrill Lynch, New York Life, Metlife and American Express Financial Advisor; I started my own registered investment advisor firm. Marshall Wealth Management, LLC has been building wealth one family at a time for over 22 years.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Selling financial services like stocks, bonds, mutual funds and life insurance to any community has challenges; however, selling those services to the black community was a difficult road to hoe. I made the decision early on in my career that my focus would be on educating my community about financial literacy and wealth management. This was not a popular decision with managers at the large companies I worked for. But I knew that there was a lot of wealth in the black community; it just had to be identified and redirected to the proper channels for family wealth building. So I started off very slow to say the least. I was often at the bottom of the sales charts. However, my persistence and commitment to educating the community paid off. I have consistently been a top producer in this industry, and a consistent member of the Million Dollar Round Table; MDRT consist of the top 3% of financial services professionals in the world.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
