Hi James, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I attended SamVerly Barber College in Atlanta Georgia in 2013. I had been cutting hair many years prior to attending Barber College. I decided I wanted to advance my education in the industry so I enrolled. Graduating from SamVerly barber college in 2014 I gained so much knowledge and honed my skills as a barber. I did an apprenticeship at Tru Kutz Barbershop in Atlanta. Having dozens of clients in my chair daily, I started paying extra attention to the maintenance and care or the lack their of, of their beards and many didn’t know how to properly manage having a beard. I saw a huge void in this sector of barbering. At this time there were not many products in your major stores like Target or Walmart. Men were using lady’s products thinking anything could go on their face and beards. That’s where Joe Finn Collection was born, in 2016 after many tries and different formulas, I came up with the perfect blend of premium ingredients and was ready to take it to market. Joe Finn is my Fathers name. I figured this would be a great way to honor my Father. The name Finn in the logo is the color orange and that’s to pay homage to my Mother, who was born in Orange Texas. My clients were making repeat purchases of my beard oil & beard butter and word started spreading. I knew I had something good when I received an offer from a company asking if I wanted to sell my company. Although the the offer was very low, it let me know I was on their radar. I was receiving orders from over seas as well.
As of today I have sold thousands of products. I’m in stores and barbershops in Katy Texas, Houston Texas, Atlanta Georgia, Detroit Michigan currently looking to get into the California region. Recently I launched a designer bag line (leather duffle travel bags)
A dozen or so celebrities have made purchases.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being/becoming an entrepreneur will always have challenges, one of the struggles I encountered was getting sales beyond the people I had contact with. Then beard products became more popular, I had to stand out, separate Joe Finn Collection from the other grooming brands. Imagine going down the bread isle in a grocery store. What makes you choose a certain loaf of bread amongst 8 dozen different companies? So marketing became a huge strategy that I had to incorporate in the business plan. Joe Finn Collection had to stand alone amongst other brands.

For those that know about money and finances still hire someone to professionally handle their taxes. I believe it only helps to find someone that does what you do at a higher level and have them mentor you. Having a mentor will only help you in the long run. I made many mistakes early on, while learning as I go approach. Having a mentor will save you so much time, money and headaches. Choosing the right mentor will help you tremendously. Find someone who has experience and success in your field, it will definitely help you.
