Community Highlights: Meet Jennifer De Ranieri of Galveston Island Market

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer De Ranieri.

Hi Jennifer , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a dedicated advocate for small businesses with a diverse background in art, digital marketing, and entrepreneurship. I’m a proud BOI (Born on the Island), my academic journey began with an Associate of Applied Science in General Studies from Galveston College, followed by a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a minor in Art History from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. My passion for digital innovation led me to Full Sail University, where I earned a Master of Science in Digital Marketing, graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA and receiving prestigious accolades including Valedictorian, two Course Director Awards, and Student of the Year.

In 2018, I channeled my entrepreneurial spirit into creating Muffin Tops Catering, a cottage food bakery celebrated for my family recipes and sculpted cakes that blend tradition with contemporary design. My commitment to local business extended further when I inherited Galveston Island Market in March 2024, continuing my mission to support and enhance the local community.

I’m also committed to helping small businesses thrive through my freelance digital marketing services. I offer tailored solutions that can fit within any budget, aiming to help businesses grow and reach their full potential. Through my ventures, I combine artistic sensibility with digital marketing expertise to foster growth and creativity in the small business sector.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all—it’s been a rewarding journey, but certainly not without its challenges. When we first started the Galveston Island Market, one of the biggest hurdles was building trust and consistency. We had to prove to both vendors and the community that this wasn’t just another pop-up—it was something sustainable, organized, and worth investing time in.

Weather has also been a constant struggle, especially being on the island. Planning an outdoor market means learning to adapt quickly, whether it’s sudden rain or extreme heat. We’ve had events where we had to make tough calls about setup or cancellation, always with the goal of keeping everyone safe while trying not to disappoint our vendors and guests.

Behind the scenes, there have been the usual small business growing pains: logistical hiccups, budgeting constraints, and the constant challenge of marketing effectively to both locals and tourists. But every obstacle taught us something and helped shape the market into the vibrant, community-centered event it is today.

As you know, we’re big fans of Galveston Island Market. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Galveston Island Market is a locally rooted, community-driven marketplace dedicated to celebrating and supporting small businesses, artisans, and local talent. We proudly host two markets each month:
• Our Day Market is held the first Saturday of every month from 9AM–2PM at St. Patrick’s Church parking lot (34th & Broadway).
• Our Night Market—Galveston Island Market: After Dark—takes place the third Saturday of the month from 3PM–9PM, running simultaneously at Saengerfest Park and Hendley Green on The Strand.

We specialize in curating a diverse and high-quality mix of vendors, offering everything from handcrafted goods and local art to boutique finds and unique eats. We’re known for our welcoming atmosphere, strong vendor support, and well-organized events that bring locals and visitors together in celebration of the island’s creative spirit.

What truly sets us apart is our commitment to giving back and lifting up the community. We proudly offer complimentary booth space to local nonprofits at each market, giving them a platform to share their missions and connect with the public. We also donate a portion of booth fees from our first Saturday Day Market to Holy Family Parish and from our third Saturday Night Market to the Galveston Historical Foundation, supporting both community outreach and historical preservation efforts on the island.

At Galveston Island Market, we believe shopping small can have a big impact. Our markets are more than just a place to browse—they’re a celebration of creativity, connection, and community. Whether you’re a vendor, shopper, or nonprofit, you’re part of something special when you participate.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
We’re thrilled to announce the launch of Mini Makers, a youth entrepreneurship program by Galveston Island Market, debuting June 14, 2025, at MarMo Market Junior.

Mini Makers empowers young entrepreneurs through hands-on experience, mentorship, and a creative outlet. Kids and teens will learn real-world business skills, build confidence, showcase their talents, and sell their own products in a supportive, community-focused environment. It’s a chance for the next generation of makers and leaders to shine.

Families can learn more and sign up at our Market Information Booth during any of our events.

Participants will be paired with an experienced vendor at our first Saturday markets, giving them direct insight into the day-to-day operations of running a business. This mentorship phase helps build foundational knowledge, confidence, and vision.

After actively participating in the program for four months (eight total market sessions or classes), each Mini Maker will receive—thanks to sponsorship support—a full market setup, including a tent, banner, and business cards, so they’re equipped to launch their own booth and brand at future markets.

Our goal is to eventually host a monthly youth-led market, giving graduates of the program a place to grow their businesses independently. Each year, we will also co-host a celebratory showcase event with MarMo Innovation called MarMo Market Junior to honor our Mini Makers and all of their incredible progress.
