Community Highlights: Meet Jordan Abney of Handyman and Sam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Abney.

Hi Jordan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a 9th grade high school teacher who started with remodeling my own home over the course of a year. My wife and I then continued to help other families make their houses into homes after work and weekends. We did this for a few months and then I was off for the summer. I ended up getting booked months out and decided to quit my job and run Handyman and Sam full time. We have been working on providing the best value we can to customers since. As an ex-teacher I know how hard and valuable it is to find an honest and affordable handyman and contractor. We have been blessed with success and continued to grow year over year and now have a team including my father in law, uncle, and 4 other handymen full time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall the road had been pretty smooth, but just like any new business there’s definitely a share of bumps along the way. From figuring out pricing, learning about all the different trades, or finding the perfect people to join your team, they all contribute a unique challenge that takes patience and flexibility to overcome. The biggest challenge I have faced and continue to face is that I don’t come from a mindset of running a business. As an ex-teacher, community and relationships are ingrained into how I run my business.

Sometimes the best business decisions aren’t the best decisions for the people involved. For me, creating a business is another way to help out the community whether that’s fixing someone’s house, or building a team based on community. At the end of the day I care more about a happy customer and a happy team member than anything else. Sometimes that leads to our company being taken advantage of or being put in tough spots, but I’m a firm believer that everyone deserves a chance and I definitely won’t let the way others treat me change the way I live my life or run my business.

As you know, we’re big fans of Handyman and Sam . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a full service handyman and remodeling company. Our specialty is being a one stop shop. Whether you need a honey do list that spans across multiple trades taken care of, or you want to remodel your entire home or add a wing for the kids, we got you.

We do projects big and small from changing light bulbs for your parents to outdoor BBQs and kitchens. We are a smaller family owned company with integrity. With a lot of companies it’s sometimes difficult to know who you can trust, that’s why we are super proud of the brand and the online profile that we created. We have hundreds of 5 star reviews and have helped so many customers turn their houses into homes.

We offer two main services. For larger projects we usually bid them out and have a qualified project manager on the job to help educate you and keep you in the loop the entire time. For smaller and medium sized projects we offer a daily rate service. We usually give a quote with a maximum out of pocket cost, but you only pay for the work that we do and we try our best to always finish as soon as possible and save you some money. I think the small to medium sized jobs is where our company shines brightest. All of our handymen are also remodelers, so they can take care of bathroom remodels from start to finish. That means you have one person in your home the entire time who you can communicate directly with to get the work done as you want it. Because the work is on a daily rate, you have the flexibility to change things on the fly without paying extra for change orders.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
The saying that any success in life is a mixture of hard work and luck is one that I wholeheartedly stand by. Luck is extremely important in being successful, but you have to put in the work so you can be ready to capitalize when lady luck calls your number. We work hard to continue to improve and offer the best service we can, but we’ve been blessed with work since the start and we’ve been lucky to find some really great people to add to our team.
