Community Highlights: Meet Kalina Moe of Coco Moe’s

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalina Moe

Hi Kalina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always loved cooking, but never realized it was my passion until after my Dad passed away. His passing was very unexpected and it rocked all of us. KkMy husband and I had our kids right out of high school, so we were young parents. Life is definitely a roller coaster, and those rides can really make or break you. My husband and I found ourselves in the roughest point of our marriage, when we found the Lord. He completely turned our lives around and we’re so grateful! As we started building our relationship with Him, the notes and plans I used to write in my journal started coming to life. He has allowed me to finally take that step and start Coco Moe’s. Our Faith has changed our family forever, and it’s a continuous journey we’re on with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I’m excited and grateful for this chapter of Coco Moe’s and to see where the Lord takes our family.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge this far was simply stepping out on faith to start this business. I think we always try to have everything perfect before we start something, but the beauty is in jumping right on in. If you have faith then you can do anything.

We’ve been impressed with Coco Moe’s, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Coco Moe is my late father’s name. He passed away in 2017. He exuded love to everyone, was the most talented man I ever knew, and taught us that family is most important. The love my Dad showed us is what I want Coco Moe’s to be known for. I’m proud to be a daughter of such a special man and to share my food with anyone who wants to try it. We’re a testimony that, despite any struggles you may have, the Lord can always turn your life around in ways you could never imagine. Coco Moe’s also represents my culture and how I grew up. My food reflects my experience as an “afakasi” growing up in Houston, Texas. The Polynesian culture hasn’t always been well known here in Houston food-wise, so my goal is to share with others the culture I was blessed to grow up in. There aren’t many other Polynesian food vendors around the city, so I’m excited to be one of the few representing H-Town. We currently attend festivals and markets to sell our food, and we can also cater events if you’re in need. We ask our customers to follow us on social media so you can keep up with our upcoming pop-ups. We’ll also be adding more items to our menu as we grow.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I had a vibrant childhood, surrounded by a large, loving family. Music, dance, and art were constant influences in my life, and I was blessed with two incredibly talented parents. My mom is an artist who created a magical childhood for me, giving me the gift of creativity and tenacity. My dad was a musician; I grew up watching him perform with his band—he was the best! I also danced in my aunt and uncle’s Polynesian group here in Houston, which provided me with many memorable experiences as a child and young adult. I credit much of my family for being role models and helping shape who I am today.
