Community Highlights: Meet Karen Terrazas of Flowers by Karen Terrazas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Terrazas.

Karen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I realized that I wanted to be a florist my senior year of college, but since I was about to graduate I didn’t drop out of school and was pressured by my parents to get a job using my degree. It wasn’t until three years later during the pandemic that I took time to reflect and realized that after three years my desire to become a florist hadn’t faded. Since I didn’t know anyone in the industry I went to the Houston School of Flowers and I quickly snowballed into opening my own business and learning more about the Houston floral industry! In August 2021, I started to learn how to freelance and network within the floral community. This upcoming August I’ll be hitting my two year mark as a florist!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Back in 2020, I didn’t comprehend the magnitude of starting your own business. I made a lot of mistakes because when I decided to open my own business I hadn’t done enough research. I was very naïve and I didn’t have any guidance until a year later when I began freelancing and was able to ask well-established floral designers on how they handled certain things. This shaped me greatly and I began to understand the Houston floral industry. All of 2020 and 2021 I was learning about my career and how things work.

At the beginning of 2022, the studio I worked in had a fire and the losses were great. I still am not back at the studio but during this time I have given much thought on how I want to shape my business moving forward and what goals I want to achieve as a floral designer.

We’ve been impressed with Flowers by Karen Terrazas, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a floral designer, I design custom floral pieces for any occasion! As of right now, I think I’m most known for the beautiful color palettes I use! I carefully put it together using what’s in season and I believe that it’s what’s spearheading my style currently. I truly love to work with my clients to bring out what the message that they are trying to convey. From sweet blue florals in a milk glass vase for a baby shower to dark maroons for a sympathy arrangement. I have even grown succulents in pastel pots! All of these details are what my brand is about.

I want readers to know that I’ll be launching a line of one-of-a-kind dry floral pieces in vintage vases soon! It’s a project that I was on the verge of launching before the studio fire and I’m avidly working to get it ready to launch again. I think this will define my style even more and I can’t wait to show everyone!

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Thank you for taking the time to read my interview, I hope I get to create something for you soon!
