Community Highlights: Meet Karla Richardson of HR Uncovered For You

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Karla Richardson.

Karla Richardson

Hi Karla, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My first ‘real job’ was with one of Michigan’s top corporate law firms in Detroit. I was an HR Assistant in the Benefits Division of Human Resources.

I continued to work in the HR field and graduated with an M.S. Degree in Human Resource Administration from Central Michigan University. I continued on my HR career path, gaining experience and honing my skills, allowing me to develop and grow professionally.

Fast forward to 2008, my family relocated to the Houston area. Here, I earned the PHR and SHRM Professional HR Certifications in 2015. In 2020, I became a Certified Professional Coach through the Academy of Creative Coaching, an International Coaching Federation (ICF) approved coaching training program.

“HR Uncovered For You” is my coaching and consulting business focused solely on individualized, one-to-one professional development coaching and strategic career planning. HR Consulting and Leadership Development Coaching are offered to motivated professionals at every career stage.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to growing a coaching and consultant business has been smooth, yes, but the road has also been curvy and, at times, difficult to navigate. Fortunately, as a solo-preneur, I have stayed the course! Designing service offerings, creating social media content, marketing, and promoting are common struggles for entrepreneurs.

I launched “HR Uncovered For You” four years ago, and essential leadership attributes have evolved since then. Managing and executive leaders need to have acumen beyond knowing the business and running operations. Leaders must have well-honed people skills and be emotionally intelligent to manage conflict, problem solve, critically think, have crucial conversations, delegate, set goals, influence, team building, reward, mentor, and develop talent.

The challenge now is to encourage mid-level and senior managers to become proactive about career advancement and increased income. Since professional coaching is generally reserved for executive leaders, mid to senior-level managers just assume professional coaching is out of reach.

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about HR Uncovered For You?
HR Uncovered For You is a professional coaching and consulting service.

Clients experience coaching and consulting that connects professional development and guidance with strategies to navigate structural, systemic, and institutional barriers to career advancement and higher salaries.

HR consultants and coaches most often work with organizations. I work with individuals. I work with individuals who would otherwise not have the opportunity to work with a professional coach or consult with an expert in HR-related areas such as equity and inclusion, employee rights, performance management, fair compensation, learning & development, succession planning, networking, and career transitions.

What sets my brand apart is also what I am most proud of being of service to working people, an advocate for them, and a champion of the opportunity to advance. I am not interested in corporate clients. I am not selling conference seats to hundreds to promote a one-size-fits-all formula for success.

Instead, I am a partner and collaborator with individual professionals who journey toward professional development that leads to earning more money. Let’s face it, that’s why anyone goes to work – to earn!

EmpowHRed Leadership Coaching Programs:

First Time Manager
Mid/Senior Level Leader
Navigating Career Transitions
New to the Organization (New Role).

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Career stagnation often occurs at the mid and senior management levels.

At these levels, salaries generally plateau within the $75,000 – $95,000 range. Earning six figures and getting home with six figures are two different things!
