Hi Kiana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The story of The Melanated Marketer began on my birthday, 11 months ago. I was getting ready to celebrate my 27th birthday with my friends and family when I remembered that I’d scheduled my first appointment with a therapist. I was hesitant to proceed with the call because, really, who wants to cry on their birthday? But as the song goes, “It’s my party. I can cry if I want to.” I went along with the call. It went very well and I was diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety, and depression. It didn’t come as much of a surprise to me because I’ve always felt like I’ve known. I struggled with the diagnosis until I finally decided to use medication to treat my symptoms. I started to feel better about myself and my abilities. I was more confident and focused, and that was when The Melanated Marketer started.
As the Melanated Marketer, I provide unique digital marketing and branding services to minority business owners in every stage of their entrepreneurial journey. Owning a business is extremely stressful and I just want people to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and to never give up on their dreams. You have what it takes to be successful in what you do and I’m always rooting for you.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road. I work in an ever-changing industry that really requires focus and commitment so having to keep up with it as it moves while maintaining my mental wellness is always challenging.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Melanated Marketer. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I started this business because I want to be an inspiration for business owners living with mental illness. I specialize in digital marketing, branding, and web design. I am known for providing my clients with grace, patience, and most importantly, results. The closer I am with my clients, I am better able to put that into their brand and build a truly unique experience for their potential customers. I think what sets me apart is that I deliver proven results without compromising the integrity and that is also what I am most proud of.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have so many people to thank and I would be heartbroken to start naming people and forget someone. I’m just going to say that I have such a loving and supportive group of family, clients, and friends, my “Framily”. I must say that my biggest motivators are my children, Kai and Karter. They truly are my biggest cheerleaders and I wouldn’t be where I am without their understanding and support. They are the best kids ever.
