Community Highlights: Meet Lara Carter of Lara Carter Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lara Carter.

Hi Lara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I’m Lara! I am a lifestyle family photographer in the Katy/Fulshear area. My love for photography started way back when I was little, and I would watch my mom try and capture every moment of me and my brother’s childhood. I remember getting excited as we would go pick them up after bring processed back in the day. Fast forward to having my first son, and my passion for learning how to take a professional photo began. I wanted to document everything, but I wanted it to look good too! After a year of trial and error and slowly trying to teach myself through YouTube, I invested in my first photography class and dived right in! I was very fortunate for patient friends letting me take their family photos to get more experience, and after a while, I got my very first paid client! After that, I got more and more families through word of mouth and continued to learn and invest in courses to help me improve. This past year I decided to go full-time as a photographer, and I am so excited to see where things will go. I am honored to have all of the clients that I do and to have them come back to me each year. They are absolutely the best and make my job so much fun!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road of a photographer is a little like a roller coaster. You start low all cool, calm, and collected. Then you go up high enjoying all the shoots and capturing all the moments. Then all of a sudden you go upside down trying to get all the images edited and out the door in a timely manner! The hardest part for me was juggling all the editing. I would sit down to edit after my kids got to bed and it would take me late into the night. I did this for years during all the busy fall seasons, but after a while, I was exhausted and burned out. I actually went back and forth on quitting my business several times because it felt like too much. I took time off where I didn’t take sessions and then shortly after decided I didn’t want to quit. I couldn’t. I loved it too much! So, I set new boundaries for myself and my business, and that has been a huge help in the work/life balancing act. All in all, thank goodness I enjoy a good roller coaster!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in capturing all the little moments with families, maternity, newborn babies, and graduating seniors. I am known for having so much fun with my clients that I just keep shooting and end up with thousands of images. Seriously, so many images! I think what I am most proud of is having little kids be sad when their photo sessions are over. It’s the best compliment to hear parents say that was the most fun they have had taking pictures before and that their kids keep asking when they get to do it again! I’m also proud when clients tell me they got emotional viewing their galleries because it means I did my job well. I want families to look back on their images and remember those moments and the ever-changing phases of their kiddos because it goes by too fast. My hope is that the love I have for my job is seen through my sessions, and that is what would set me apart!

What makes you happy?
So many things bring me joy and make me happy, but spending quality time with my family and friends is just the best! I have three not-so-little boys now, and I am so happy God chose me to be their mom. They are full of personality and so much fun to be around. All three of them love baseball, so we practically live at the ball field, but it makes me happy watching them do what they love and be so great at it! My happy place at night would be sitting on a patio with my husband, some friends, wine, and country music playing! Other things that fill my cup are ANY kind of chocolate, Mexican food, dogs, and watching people go out of their way to be kind to one another just out of the goodness of their hearts!
