Community Highlights: Meet Madelyn Nance of Mind Cheq, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madelyn Nance

Hi Madelyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey to the position I currently hold was not a straight line, as is the case for many others. Initially uncertain about my career aspirations,  I enrolled in courses for one degree and subsequently switched halfway through. Because I was advised that I would excel in the field, I ultimately obtained a bachelor’s degree in education. In the end, I was a teacher for nearly eight years. Over my teaching career, I worked for private, charter, and public school systems. During those eight years, I discovered that my genuine passion was not teaching but working with children, adolescents, and adults in alternative capacities. This led me to go back to school to pursue a master’s degree in counseling. Since my graduation, I have worked in various counseling contexts, such as private practice, juvenile probation, and addiction treatment programs. I am perpetually seeking opportunities to assist others as I continue to work in this profession. As a result, I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Organization & Management: Executive Coaching at Liberty University with the intention of assisting organizations and individuals with mental health-related issues in the workplace.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As with most things, things have not always been smooth. At times, I had to wait for time to pass or for endorsement to move forward with getting licensed, improving my skills, taking steps to start my own private practice, and working with various advocacy groups or movements. Within the mental health profession, a significant obstacle I face is locating research data and methodologies that have been established as evidence-based practices while also considering acculturation, culture, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, and other variables that can influence the therapeutic process and influence social stigma As part of my therapeutic approach and objective; I want to promote the importance of establishing an environment that fosters cultural competence in addressing the mental health and everyday life challenges of clients from their own perspective. I enjoy learning about other cultures through travel, food, and individual narratives from individuals from various places. Clients’ narratives, cultures, and experiences can be essential in the therapeutic process.

As you know, we’re big fans of Mind Cheq, PLLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am in the process of opening my own private practice, Mind Cheq, PLLC. The goal of my practice is to work with individuals who are going through a period of change, want to reach their full capacity, overcome obstacles, grow, and develop self-awareness by providing support. I have experience with various evidence-based modalities and want to collaborate with individuals to create a personalized treatment plan that suits their needs. I think therapy is a collaborative process where therapists and clients can work together to explore how behaviors, thoughts, and actions can affect their daily lives and relationships.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
It is vital for me to possess adaptability and education to effectively engage with a wide range of clientele and methodologies. Within my therapeutic approach and goals, I want to emphasize the need to create a conducive atmosphere that nurtures cultural competency in effectively addressing clients’ mental health and daily life challenges from their own lenses. To do this, I continuously strive to expand my knowledge to encompass other modalities, enhance my existing techniques and talents related to specific modalities, and get insights from my clients on their identities and narratives.
