Community Highlights: Meet Mary Ellen Deaton of Capt. Mary E’s Guide Service

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Ellen Deaton.

Hi Mary Ellen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
To start from the very beginning, I was born and raised in Mississippi, and my passion for fishing began early in life. Some of my fondest childhood memories are the days and nights spent inshore fishing out of Cocodrie with my dad and my brothers. Those long hours on the water taught me patience, respect for our fisheries, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors.

Fast forward a bit — after earning my degree from Mississippi State in 2018, I moved to the Houston area to pursue a career in engineering and finance in the oil and gas industry. Since then, I’ve devoted nearly all of my spare time to studying the Upper Texas Coast, wading its flats and reefs, learning its seasonal patterns, and deepening my skills as an angler. My obsession with chasing big trout pushed me to refine every detail of my approach, from gear to technique to understanding the subtleties of the fishery. Over time, that investment evolved into guiding professionally, where I now have the opportunity to share my knowledge and passion for fishing with others.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like most worthwhile paths, mine hasn’t been entirely smooth. Moving from Mississippi to Houston and stepping into my first job in the energy industry after graduation was a major transition. I was young, in a new city where I knew no one, learning a new job, and trying to build a life and identity away from everything I had known. Balancing a full‑time career with the time and dedication required to truly learn the Upper Texas Coast wasn’t easy either, but when I reflect on it, it’s been a lot of fun.

Fishing requires patience, humility, and a willingness to fail repeatedly while you figure things out. There were years of early mornings, long drives, skunked days, and lessons learned the hard way. Building my Texas skillset from scratch meant starting over in a fishery completely different from the one I grew up in. In times where I have doubted myself and questioned my path, the phrase I’d repeat to myself over was simple: “There ain’t nothing to it but to do it.” And that’s exactly what I’ve done for the last eight years.

Guiding has also come with its own challenges. Establishing credibility, earning trust, and proving myself in a male‑dominated space has required persistence and consistency. I had to learn how to balance professionalism with passion, and how to maintain integrity even when it meant turning down trips that weren’t the right fit.

Every challenge has shaped me into a better angler, a better guide, and a stronger person. The road hasn’t been perfectly smooth, but it’s been meaningful, and I wouldn’t change it.

We’ve been impressed with Capt. Mary E’s Guide Service, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I offer a professional inshore guide service in Surfside Beach, Texas, specializing in trophy trout, redfish, and flounder throughout the Galveston Bay complex. I operate a 23’ Haynie Magnum outfitted for four, providing both wading and boat‑fishing experiences tailored to each client’s goals, skill level, and comfort. All gear is included — you just show up ready to fish.

One of the things I’m most known for is wade fishing for trophy trout year‑round. It’s a style of fishing that demands patience, precision, and a deep understanding of the fishery — and it’s where I’ve invested most of my time over the past eight years. While wading is my specialty, I also enjoy running boat‑fishing trips and creating experiences that match exactly what a client wants out of their day on the water.

I’m also proud to bring a strong female presence to a space that has historically been male‑dominated. I partner with a variety of outdoor ladies’ organizations and create environments where first‑timers and experienced anglers alike can enjoy their time on the water, feel comfortable, and learn something new.

Clients can expect a guide who is fully invested, fully present, and committed to helping them learn, improve, and enjoy the water. That’s the heart of my brand, and it’s what I strive to deliver every time I leave the dock.

What makes you happy?
I’m happiest when I’m on the water. Fishing has been part of my life since I could walk, and it continues to be the place where I feel the most grounded and connected. Sharing that passion with others, whether it’s guiding a client to their first trophy trout or watching someone fall in love with the coast the way I did, brings me a lot of joy. I also find happiness in growth, learning, and building something meaningful within the fishing community.
