Today we’d like to introduce you to Mel Garza.
Hi Mel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started out as a framer working in the summers with my Dad building houses in Houston and the surrounding areas. After high school I attended Lone Star College and got my degree in Architectural Design. Once college was completed I went to work for Kevin Young Designers in 2006. There I learned how to pick up redlines and produce drawings from start to finish. I quickly moved on after 1.5 years, and went to work at Preston Wood & Associates in 2007. I worked there for 7 years as a production specialist. I worked closely with Preston Wood in whom I consider to be the most well rounded designer I have run across. His ability to pick up different styles and master them is something that I pride myself in. In 2014 I had a small stint with Anderson Canyon where I worked closely with Tom O’leary as a production specialist. In 2016 I went in a total different direction and went to work for a general contractor who built commercial projects like Hotels, strip centers, gas stations, and mechanic shops. I spent 1.5 picking up skills and learning things that will help me in my work. In 2017 I decided to open up my own company and begin my own journey. During this time I learned what it took to run a company and decided I was not ready to fully grasp it on my own. In mid 2018 I rejoined Preston Wood & Associates as the lead designer. There I worked closely with Samantha Wood to design homes of many different styles and sizes. I worked there til late 2021. This is when I re-opened my company to design and build homes.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The challenges for me is getting the company name out to the surrounding areas. We have begun to build a marketing team to focus on this issue.

JEG Design & Build designs homes of all sizes and styles. We have design townhomes, apartments, small homes, custom homes, remodels, and additions. We design build outs for restaurants and office buildings. We build our own designs as well. We currently have a home on the market in the Bentwater subdivision in Montgomery, Texas. What sets us apart from everybody else is our attention to detail. The floor plans will be more efficient than any of our competitors. Since I have experience in the field, I save my clients money with efficient designs. Our designs have an unmatched curb appeal. Proportion is also a big detail that we like to go after in all our plans. Our prices for plans are always negotiable. This is because I want everyone to get what they really want to fit their budget. No one should lose out on quality of plans because of being priced out.
How do you define success?
Success is being able to be happy with the result of your work. This is for every aspect of it, from getting paid to the client being happy with the design, and the project being built.
