Community Highlights: Meet Misty Mills of Lotus Canine Companions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Misty Mills.

Hi Misty, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started working with dogs professionally in 2009. My background was mass communication and public relations. There’s more overlap than I expected!

I saw what a difference positive training made for dogs and their families, so I began working towards certification. (It’s not required in the US, but professionalism, excellence and credibility are important to me.)

I earned my certification in 2014, and opened Lotus Canine Companions in 2015.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The Covid pandemic was a struggle. I had to learn how to adapt to working more in public spaces as well as virtually. It ended up being a true gift.

We’re seeing dogs now who were adopted in 2020 and 2021 and really missed out on safe, appropriate socialization and training. These dogs can absolutely be helped. I love the relief pet parents feel when they realize their adult dog can still learn new ways of moving through the world.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I offer private, one-on-one training in my clients’ homes. That’s where problems crop up, and it’s where our dogs spend the majority of their lives, so it’s the best place to train. We avoid the situation where a dog learns to behave in a sterile training room, but the skills don’t transfer to home life. We start in the home life and get amazing transformations.

I teach all ages and all breeds from comprehensive puppy programs, adult dog training, behavior modification, help with anxious or fearful dogs and rescue and breeder coaching.

I am a member of the Association for Professional Dog Training International and the Shock-Free Coalition. I’m almost through a service dog training certification through Atlas Assistance Dogs.

I believe deep in my bones that kindness is powerful. I work with my students to change the world one dog at a time!

What I’m most proud of though the the fund I set up at a local rescue group after the passing of my dog Bette in August 2024. Bette was rescued at 2 years old and absolutely would have been a dog that got returned if she hadn’t been adopted by a trainer. She blossomed with patience and kindness. The Bette Fund is established at Operation Pets Alive and funds positive training for foster dogs and newly adopted dogs. I had two stipulations when we began. First, it could only be used for reward-based training. Second, they couldn’t use the money to hire me. Ethics is important, so they hire one of several fabulous positive dog trainers in our area when the dip into that fund. Bette isn’t here physically anymore, but I know her spirit is out there making a difference.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My earliest childhood memory is of being licked in the face by my uncle’s Irish Setter. Maybe it all started then?

We always had animals growing up – cats, dogs, fish, hamsters, cows. I still save worms from the sidewalk when I’m out for a walk.

Animals bring such joy to our lives. I always want my students to remember that. Joy the the big WHY of life with an animal. Training and living with them should be fun.
