Today we’d like to introduce you to Monae Moyer.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my bartending journey about seven years ago in Charlotte, North Carolina and recently relocated to Houston, Texas last year. During this time, I have developed experience in many different types of bars from dive to craft. I was able to take this knowledge and apply it to starting my own business. I’ve always enjoyed bartending and it quickly became a fun hobby for me. I decided to start my own bartending business during a time that I was hosting community networking events. As the host, I was responsible for contracting live performances, food trucks, vendors, and venues to ensure these events passed the vibe check. The events got better with time and the only thing missing were cocktails. With my years of experience, it was a no brainer for me to jump in to provide the cocktails. People started asking, “How can I book you for my upcoming event?” Once the opportunity found me, I haven’t looked back since!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, no it has not been a smooth road but I didn’t expect it to be. Every struggle came with a lesson that would only make myself and my business better. Being a business owner comes with the responsibility of wearing different hats. You’re in charge of marketing, managing bookings, inventory, expenses, and much more. The hard-hitting struggle for me was that I didn’t start with much experience in some of those areas so I had to learn and I am still learning along the way.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Mix Queen. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am an award winning bartender/mixologist also known as The Mix Queen. I provide an all-inclusive private event bartending experience for any occasion! I also provide cocktail consultations for new bars or established bars that are looking to revise their menu. The focus of my brand is to create and serve cocktails and culture. Inspired by the classics, I add an innovative and unique touch to every single drink I prepare. This commitment to perfecting my craft drives me to push the boundaries of mixology, resulting in culturally infused cocktails that I’m proud to serve!
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I was always taking something I was interested in at the moment and figuring out ways I could sell it to my friends and family members. I was young and I didn’t need to work but I wanted to make my own money to buy whatever I wanted. My stepdad used to call me “DJ Mo” because I would make everyone CD’s with the hottest songs at the time. My cousin and I started a business selling distressed jeans to our family members when we were in middle school. The list goes on. Regardless of the type of business, I always had an entrepreneurial mindset. I knew I wanted to find something I could call mine that would allow me to create and make a living from.
