Community Highlights: Meet Nasiya Ahmed of Village Physicians

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nasiya Ahmed.

Hi Nasiya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a native Houstonian. I went to medical school at the McGovern Medical School (UT) in Houston and did my residency and fellowship at the University of Arizona in Tucson. As part of my residency training, I was required to do a geriatric medicine rotation. This rotation was eye opening for me. I realized that many of the issues that older people dealt with and that physicians often attributed to old age had treatments. It was a rotation where I could truly improve the quality of life of my patients. Furthermore, I enjoyed working with a population that valued the doctor patient relationship. On a more personal note, I really enjoyed working with the older population and enjoyed listening to their experiences from a bygone era.

Village Physicians was founded with the vision of incorporating present day services into a neighborhood doctors office to offer quality health care to older adults. Value is placed on the holistic care and the doctor-patient relationship, We offer convenient and longer appointment times as well as after hour physician services. With this in mind, I developed a system where I can see patients in clinic, at home, and in the hospital. We also do many in office procedures that benefit older people, such as joint injections and IV infusions. I try to offer other services in my clinic as well, such as hearing testing and therapy. For my homebound patients, I have a mobile phlebotomist and contract with an imaging company to do x-rays and ultrasounds in the home. I also offer palliative care and hospice services as well.

We offer our geriatric consult and education services through our telemedicine program to patients residing anywhere in Texas. For us, this endeavor is a partnership; as our clinic grows we hope to be guided only by the needs of our patients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I recommend all physicians to start their own practice. How ever there was definitely a steep learning curve. A few things I learned around the way…

1. Tailor your clinic to your patient’s needs
2. Have multiple sources of revenue
3. Always make time for yourself and also team bonding time with your staff
4. Investigate all opportunities thoroughly
5. Know how to do everything in your clinic, from procedures to billing
6. Don’t get too jaded dealing with the corporate side of medicine
7. I have found solo/private practice physicians the most helpful, so don’t hesitate to reach out when you need help

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We have created a unique practice that specializes in care of the older adult. I am proud of our clinic and welcome others to come check us out!

How do you define success?
I define success as accomplishing my goals while also being content and happy.
