Today we’d like to introduce you to Nia Brown.
Hi Nia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up as a young black girl has always been a gift for me. Knowing that I was different from what the world was used to seeing win, I’ve always been determined to grow up and beat the odds. Being from St. Louis, Missouri was just the start of it all. Coming from a small city that many people don’t make it out of, I’m always mindful of that. The way I grew up and seeing my city for how it played a big part in my drive and my ambition to be great. When my family and I moved to Houston, it was a fresh start to the bigger dreams that I wanted to accomplish. I’ve always been the girl who loved to get dolled up and do what I wanted to do. Some might say that I’m a little extra but I definitely wouldn’t be me if I didn’t go overboard. With that being said, I knew from the start that I would have to do things my way! No matter what time of day it is, I’m always thinking of new things I can do to better myself and make an impact on the world around me. My mother has played a big part in my new entrepreneur life. When your mother sees bigger and better in you, it motivates you to go harder and go the extra mile to see yourself on top. We both were thinking of ways we could make new money while being spontaneous. Although selling lashes is a saturated business, I knew that I wanted to do something different that not a lot of people do. On your average day, you don’t walk around and see an eyelash vending machine. I knew for certain that this would be something exciting and new. Be on the lookout for our very first Pretty Prime Vending Machine coming in late 2022. I chose the name Pretty Prime Beauty because I had a strong feeling that I was entering my Prime season. What better way is there to be in your prime, than being pretty in your prime. When I think of my brand, I think of so many more ideas coming out of it besides just beauty. Whatever I do I want to make sure that I’m encouraging people like me to stay dedicated to anything they want to do. Whether big or small, everybody can accomplish what they put their minds to. Being your own boss isn’t something that happens overnight nor is it easy. When you want better in life you must have the actions to match. One thing I admire about myself is my mindset. Without a doubt, I’m very confident in “If I want it, I will find a way to get it.” Things aren’t always peaches and cream but I know that if I never give up on myself, I’ll make myself and many others proud in the long run. I’m from the Show Me State, so one thing I will forever do in life is SHOW people that you can beat the odds no matter what or where you come from!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Although the entrepreneur’s outcome seems lovely, the road to getting there and being successful in it isn’t always easy. The biggest obstacle I think I will say is having self-discipline. Many people don’t know the little things but beyond the hard work, you must train yourself to remain focused. As a young college student, it’s very easy to get off track or think it’s okay to slack just a little. Even though I’m young and need to live my life, I must also learn how to be great in the specific areas I want to grow in. Having a small business while being in college has made me open my eyes quickly to the true meaning of balance. I want to have a nursing degree to sit on while growing my business. From time to time I see myself drifting off or procrastinating and quickly remember that I like expensive things. Not only do I love expensive things but I want my family to be set and have expensive things right along with me. To every person out there trying to juggle multiple things at once, learn your meaning of balance and what that looks like for you. Discipline yourself when you know it is needed. Live life but think about your future as well. We must remember that we have things to accomplish and people to make proud. Also, the haters to stunt on but that’s beside the point! Remain strong and positive at all times.
As you know, we’re big fans of Pretty Prime Beauty. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Pretty Prime Beauty’s main products are Mink and Russian Lashes. We have a style/look for every customer! At the moment I would say our biggest difference from other lash businesses is our Russian lashes. Russian lashes are just starting to hit the lash industry and aren’t very known yet. We want to introduce people to the new wave of our Russian Lashes. We want people to say “Oh that must be Pretty Prime Beauty because not many sell Russian lashes.” I also mentioned our Pretty Prime Vending machine that will come to a location later this year. Pretty Prime Beauty plans on having vending machines In Houston but all over the world in many different states. All of our lashes are hand-made with love and packaged with even more love and care. We make it a priority to make sure every customer is happy and always has good things to say about Pretty Prime Beauty as we make a name for ourselves.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
We are in the year 2022! Researching things is very easy and anybody can do it. I would say that starting off, I watched a lot of people on Youtube. in the field that I want to be great in. I love to read so I love reading articles on people like me who have made a name for themselves. I have a time where I kind of take notes and plan out how these notes will help me better myself. I’m very big on self-improvement so I analyze myself and figure out how to help myself grow. I’m still looking for a great mentor who can relate to me in many different ways. Not only am I a small business owner, I’m a college student as well. I would love to find someone who knows how to tie both of those ropes together and be successful. I would say when looking, make sure you find someone who is genuine in helping you and very stern in their business and their skills. Social Media is also a big part of getting your name out there. Marketing is something that is tricky but can be easy if you connect with the right people. Like I said before you need someone who is on the same page as you and sees bigger in you as well. In life, you will notice that most things are about who you know and who can play a role in helping you succeed.
