Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Mock.
Hi Nicole, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started practicing Pilates after the birth of my first daughter. Pregnancy had created imbalances in my body, resulting in lower back and neck pain that my regular gym workouts couldn’t alleviate. I was drawn into a Pilates free trial and LOVED it immediately. Pilates helped to rebuild my core, stretch, lengthen, and strengthen muscles that had been neglected from years of sitting at a desk and then growing and caring for a tiny human. As a result, I started feeling better, and the back and neck pains went away.
However, in an effort to cut back on our spending and due to occasional laziness, I stopped doing the Pilates work that my body loved and needed. The pains returned. With the arrival of another baby who required holding in uncomfortable positions all night long, the pains intensified. As I took on a part-time desk job, the discomfort worsened. Eventually, I returned to Pilates—I HAD to!
I had practiced Pilates off and on for over 10 years before I decided to get certified to teach. During those 10 years, I learned that there are many different Pilates practices out there.
I found my favorite instructors, my favorite classes, my favorite style. Unfortunately, my favorite style was not available in Sugar Land. My favorite style and teachers were teaching Classical Pilates at small, privately owned studios in Houston. The classes just flowed so well; it was like a fun reformer dance! I went into Houston to get my Peak Pilates Teaching Certification. I wanted to teach the kind of Pilates I most enjoyed practicing, in a small studio environment….and then 2 years later I made the decision to bring that to Sugar Land, for myself and for others. As luck would have it, my Chiropractor of 7 years was also looking to bring something new into a connected space called The Lab that focuses on Personal Training and Rehabilitation. It was the perfect symbiotic relationship of fitness, mobility, and spinal care.
After months of preparation and planning, Pilates Lab opened in October 2023 in a small space connected to The Lab side of Simon Spine. With only 4 reformers we are able to offer semi-private Classical Pilates Training in a fun and friendly environment, making Pilates a more affordable option for ALL.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Life is never smooth and obstacle-free. The confidence in my ability and knowledge needed to open my own business was definitely my biggest obstacle along the way. It was something I had not really considered until the last year or two. I knew almost nothing about what was needed to make it happen. But I have been lucky in that many things just “fell into place” for me on this venture, making it feel like I was just taking one baby step at a time until there was no turning back.
I found people who knew what it took to open a business, talked to everyone, and picked their brains. How do I create an LLC? Where do I open my business account? What software programs do I need? How do I get the money? Do I need Quickbooks? How do I use Quickbooks, and for what? Do I need a CPA? What else do I not know?!?! Everything takes forever because I had to learn HOW to do it before actually DOING it. And the list of things never seems to end.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Pilates Lab, we offer both private and small semi-private group sessions with only 4 reformers, with the option to grow to up to 6. Pilates was based on executing precise and controlled movements, utilizing the small stabilizing muscles in your body. In order to ensure each client is working to the best of their ability that day, we keep our class sizes small to always provide personalized attention. Private Sessions are a great option for anyone who needs special attention confidence before jumping into a group session, has specific goals or issues they are working to correct, or just prefers the 1:1 attention.
What’s so amazing about Pilates is that it really is for everyone. Our clients come from all stages of life:
• Current and former athletes looking to up their game and prevent injury.
• Moms are looking to rebuild their bodies post-babies.
• Seniors wanting to stay fit and mobile for many years to come.
• Individuals who are on a new fitness journey looking to become a healthier version of themselves.
• Clients with clinical issues that need the special attention that Pilates can offer
• Individuals who are looking to help reverse and prevent neck and low back pains caused by their day jobs and activities.
Pilates is for EVERYONE! We have classes of all levels and abilities because everyone is different and coming from different starting points, yet we all have the same goals of health, wellness, physical fitness, community, and happiness.
How about the studio and the pricing?
The times in my life when I made fitness a priority was when I felt the best, was the happiest, and was my most confident self. My goal in opening Pilates Lab is to allow everyone to feel this way. I wanted to bring a small studio experience to Sugar Land where members would enjoy small group classes that offer a personalized community experience and focused attention in an affordable package. Pilates is best practiced 2-3 days a week for most people. However, we also understand that Pilates may not be all that you do as part of your active lifestyle, schedules are busy, and everyone has a different budget for their health and fitness. And so, we offer many different membership and pricing options to try and fit a wide range of needs. You can take your first class at Pilates Lab for just $20, our membership options range from $155 – $410 per month, and we offer drop-in rate and class packs without the membership commitment. Our private sessions are priced competitively, and rates vary based on package and instructor. You can view all of our pricing packages and our schedule at www.PilatesLabTX.com.
Pricing:
