Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Mazoch.
Hi Rachel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I graduated with my BBA from Texas A&M University in 2017 – WHOOP! I then went to work in industry for a few years but always knew I wanted to do public accounting, taxes specifically. In 2019, I started working for a public accounting firm in Houston. After trying both audit and tax, it was confirmed that taxes were what I was born to do. In the middle of COVID simultaneously raising a toddler, I successfully passed my final CPA exam and became a licensed Texas CPA in July 2021. I then went to work for another accounting firm in Texas as I continued to grow my skillset. I began offering my own services in December 2023. By December 2024, I decided it was time to get my own office and make things official. Go big or go home, right? I juggled working part time as my previous employer and handling my own clients from January to May 2025. Then I decided it was time to take the leap full time into my own CPA business. Within 1 year, I have already created lasting client relationships and been able to give back to the community. I cannot wait to see what the future has in store!
My favorite quote comes from A Cinderella Story – “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.” Life is worth taking risks and I’m so glad I took the risk on starting my own CPA firm.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. I wish it was, but there’s so much that goes into being a CPA, especially being a business owner. I have had clients pushback on my pricing. I have learned to set boundaries in terms of time and scope of services agreed upon. I have had people not pay me for services provided. I have had clients ask me to do something that isn’t following the rules, but I prioritize transparency and honesty so I have had to say no. On top of business issues, I have 3 young children so life is chaotic at times. Between babies throwing up on me and then working late nights and all weekend to catch up on work, it can be overwhelming at times.
I am a Christ-follower, so I have gotten through the difficult times through prayer, worship, and giving my problems to God. There’s an unexplainable peace that comes with that.
As you know, we’re big fans of Rachel Mazoch CPA LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a single-person CPA firm in Needville, Texas. I currently offer the following services: tax preparation and tax estimates, bookkeeping, IRS correspondence, and consulting services. My specialty is tax preparation for individuals and small businesses (all types). I have a lot of experience in helping clients catchup on their tax filings, whether it be 2 or 6 years of returns. In my experience, a lot of people have told me that they have trouble getting ahold of CPA’s or getting their calls returned. I follow up with my clients. An email does not leave my inbox until it has been responded to. I make notes about who I need to return phone calls to. I am truly proud of my willingness to work with people and my transparency about pricing, as well as giving advice that many other firms may not include. If I notice something during tax preparation that could be done better or needs attention to help reduce taxes, I’m going to say that. There are no surprise large billings at the end of a project. I prioritize honesty, transparency, and accuracy at my firm.
Any big plans?
Right now, I’m going to keep chugging along. This will be my first tax season full time in my CPA business (last year I was also working part time for another firm). I currently have 1 nonprofit client, and I’d love to have more nonprofit clients. Eventually, I’d like to hire an administrative assistant and possibly another CPA to work alongside me. It would be my dream to take over the old Simple Simon’s building on Main Street in Needville. Right now the owner has used it for storage for years. I think about running in there as a kid and eating pizza from the buffet and looking at all the VHS tapes. I want to create a space where I can make a difference in peoples’ lives.
