Today we’d like to introduce you to Trung Nguyen.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Originally attending a graduate program, studying Pharmacy—I found myself unhappy with the line of work I found myself in. Working in the retail setting got burnt out. I thought that maybe changing the work setting would change my mind-set. I started to work and the psychiatric ward for close to 8 months. Then, I was sure it was not what I wanted to pursue as a career. After some time of soul searching, I found myself at what seemed to be a dead end. One day, a cousin of mine asked for me to cut his hair, since he couldn’t afford his barber that month. I was a bit confused why I was being asked—since I had ZERO experience! Honestly, by the time we went to the store to buy the necessary tools, he could have just gone to his barber. Nonetheless, I did the haircut and he raved about how good it looked and suggested I do hair for a living. At the time, I didn’t have an inkling of wanting to pursue cosmetology as a career… so naturally, I just laughed. Little did I know a seed was planted. A year later down the road, I told myself; “I don’t have anything better going on, so I might as well give it a try.”
I started experimenting on my own hair, other friends’ and family. I became really inspired and decided to enroll at the local Paul Mitchell School. Fast forward to graduation and passing my licensure exam; I started working for a very small hole in the wall salon tucked away in Sugar Land. There, I started my apprenticeship—washing hair and folding towels ‘til my hands cracked, on minimum wage; working 50-60 hours a week without any overtime. Although most wouldn’t have toughed it out; I continued to strive forward honing my skills and learning the trade. I steadily built my clientele until I was producing well over 6 figures in the salon, being one of the youngest there. After some time and consideration and felt like it was time for the next step in my career. I decided to move on to be a National Color Educator for John Paul Mitchell Systems. Currently, I run a successful salon suite in Sugar Land servicing my wonderful clients.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, I think I mentioned everything in the previous statement, but finding something you’re passionate about and turning that into a career; where you won’t feel burnt out!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Black Tulip Salon?
I’ve always believed in turning the world beautiful, one head at a time. Firm to that belief; I strive to give my salon guests a unique guest experience. Imagine walking in to Saks and your sales associate helping you in finding the perfect tailored outfit. Essentially, I recreate that same experience in the salon. From a thorough consultation, to detailed descriptions of what’s happening to the hair during the appointment, as well as all the necessary steps to maintain the look are all vital to a successful appointment. Of course, every hair appointment WOULD NOT be a hair appointment, without a little therapy in between. My career has developed from simply putting foils into someone’s hair, to building trust & life long relationships with each and every client.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If I had any piece of advice to share with anyone, it would be to treat the client in your chair like they’re your only client. That was the motto I lived by everyday and still continue to do so, present day. I believe that when doing so, you can provide the best service possible!
