Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyne’ N. Mattox, (pronounced TUH-nay MA-tuhks), managing and co-founding partner of Mattox Law Firm, PLLC (MLF).
Tyne’, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in Oakland, California I was raised by loving parents who instilled self-worth, discipline, and humbleness in me from a very young age. Although I grew up in a single-parent home, I never felt like I lacked any love or attention from either of my parents.
I always dreamed of going away to college and after visiting, for spring break, I decided that Miami, Florida was the place for me! I attended the only historically black college in Miami, FL. Florida Memorial University, home of the fighting lions! Attending my alma mater helped me discover myself and paved the way to what I believe was the next big thing in my life, law school.
I attended law school at “Thee” Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and could not have prayed for a better place to develop my lawyering skills. While completing my studies I met my husband/law firm partner, James. C. Mattox III. We started Mattox Law Firm, PLLC shortly after law school.
We have been in practice for almost a decade and have enjoyed learning to work together and having the flexibility to raise and participate in all activities of our two beautiful boys, James C. Mattox IV and Davis J. Mattox.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe that my road to success was fairly smooth until I found out that law school grades were determined by one test given at the end of the semester. This may have been understood by others, but it was news to me, and I was already enrolled in class ready to do my best lol. However, I made it through and made the Dean’s List throughout my matriculation.
My second hurdle was passing the Texas Bar Exam. Texas law is very different from Louisiana law, so some of the required courses in Texas, I had never heard of. However, after two failures of less than ten points and my older brother encouraging me to finish strong, I finally passed on the third try (the third time’s a charm) and have been practicing law ever since.
My third challenge was changing my mindset and deciding to run our law firm like a business. In law school, we learned law and how to practice law. We did not learn how to start our own practice and generate success. With that, I have spent countless hours working on the business which includes but is not limited to Human Resources, social media management, bookkeeping, marketing, and client concierge.
I believe that the process of overcoming challenges and continuing to pursue my dream helped me be the grounded person I am today. It has also helped me succeed in my other business ventures.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At our firm, we protect families when all odds are stacked against them during the most vulnerable time of their lives. We also provide them with reassurance while walking them through the process of their case.
Our firm has continued to grow throughout the years transitioning from a general law practice (taking all cases that came through the door), to handling only Personal Injury, Family Law, and Bankruptcy; to our now niche of only assisting clients in Personal Injury matters.
We are super excited about this change and foresee ourselves not only assisting our existing clients but giving our team room to help substantially more new clients in the future. We offer FREE consultations and clients only have to pay us if we recover a settlement for them.
As I continue to excel in my business, I’ve seen my accomplishments flourish throughout the entire process. I’m very proud of myself for being admitted into two Federal District Courts in Texas, Texas Bar College and have also been selected by Super Lawyers to the Texas Rising Stars list for 2023!
Since 2022, MLF supports military veterans through the nonprofit, T.K. Davis Foundation which was established in honor of my late father, Tyrone Keith Davis.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
As it stands, the legal industry has shifted to a more “VIRTUAL” concept. Although court hearings are being held in person now, virtual hearings are here to stay. Employees are feeling entitled to remote positions versus traditional in-office positions. Consequently, I can see many more remote positions being offered and filled in the future.
Our industry will be more technical and having only book smarts won’t cut it. Future employment seekers, that desire to work in this industry, will have to be more tech-savvy. Meaning they will have to know how to use cloud-based software, solve technical problems, and stay on top of new innovations. These are skills that we are looking for when hiring to stay ahead of the future changes in our industry.
