Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Jackson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story is a long story! But to make it short I migrated from West Africa to the US at the age of 19. After arriving to the US, I worked as a mechanic, joined the United States Air Force and served for 8 years. Got out and started medical school at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. After medial school, I did my residency in Internal medicine at UTMB. After residency I worked in different capacities (outpatient physician, associate medical director for Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and lastly as a community based clinic physician) at UTMB before opening a private practice in Galveston.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No it has not been a complete smooth road. Starting a family in medical school with a wife that could not get a job in Galveston, we had to temporarily get on food stamps. Also having children in medical school you have to prioritize and be more efficient with your time.
The biggest struggle is being sued from the very institution that has trained me in effort to shut down my private practice. But in all these I continue to move forward.
