Today we’d like to introduce you to Cammie Gilbert.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cammie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It’s been an interesting and winding road. A collection of pitfalls and uprisings in determination. I didn’t always sing. At one point, I had no creative or musical outlets in my life at all. But eventually, the right people came along and I found a place I felt confident to explore who I wanted to be and to discover the talents I possessed. I found my calling and even better it was right here in Houston. Joining Oceans of Slumber has set my life on a trajectory I never could have imagined. I hope to continue for a very long time.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never easy doing something different. You’re expected to not only maintain the comings and goings of regular life but also make time to nurture and grow your gifts and talents. If the two don’t coincide it can be a daunting balance to maintain. For me putting myself in the public eye brought up insecurities I didn’t know I had. I’ve struggled with finding the line between transparency and privacy, as well as feelings of being good enough. For young women putting themselves out there, I stress focusing on having integrity and authenticity. I believe focusing on these will help shield them from feeling less than and getting trapped in a state comparison.
What should we know about Oceans Of Slumber? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am the lead singer for Oceans of Slumber, an internationally touring Progressive Metal band signed with Century Media Records. We are incredibly proud to be from Houston and to share music that has placed itself in the hearts of those looking for a deeper, darker, and heavier sound to soothe their souls.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I’ve learned a tremendous amount from my vocal coach Mary Zimmer. I follow her blog and as well as her pages for more great tips and advice. She can be found on Youtube and Facebook by searching VocalHacks by Mary Z.
