Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning your own business is not easy, however with prayer, faith, and a good support system, you will succeed. I believe that if you go into business with the right mind and passion, your business will prosper. One thing I have always told myself was to not allow anyone to move me faster than what I was moving. It is not a race! I have always prayed and asked God to lead the way. I was fortunate enough to use my finances from my everyday job to help build my business, however, there were times when I felt things were moving too slow. Trust the process and remember why the company was started! It does get frustrating at times because I do not have anyone to assist in the decision-making process and I’m not always sure if I made the best decision, however creating my own website and being 100% involved in my company, created a trust between my clients and I. Anyone who calls, text or emails Divine Hair Co. I feel confident in my services because I’m very knowledgeable about the services and products I sell.

My advice to anyone is to keep pushing and learn from each trial. Work smart, not hard and definitely do not knock your day job. Use that financial source to help you fund your dream until you can be completely on your own. Never stop learning and open your mind to new things, ideas, books, networking events, seminars, and more. Lastly, you know your vision. Do not let anyone deter you from your dream. I do not care if it seems like everyone is doing the same thing. Find the niche and do not let up! If you keep pushing, trusting, and crossing at least one thing off your to-do list a day, then eventually, you will see results!

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
My mother has ALWAYS been supportive. I could not have done this without her. Even now that I am grown and living in Houston, she as well as my father will travel to help me at every event and turnaround to Dallas to be at my little sister’s event. My mother has always been a hard-worker and has pushed me to reach my goals. When my mother told me “the sky is the limit” and showed me that she would do whatever it took for me to not go without, I believed her and promised her I would make her proud. My father taught me how to hustle; sleepless nights, sacrifices and what it takes to succeed in this life. My parents meant it when they said “don’t tell me about everyone else. You not everybody.” The times when I want to give up and begin telling myself, “anything after graduating is just extra of me” or “everybody else doing this or that,” I remember that I’m not everybody and there is a calling on my life. Most importantly, I was not allowed to bring a “C” home from school and my grandmother felt that a low “80” was too close to a “C.”

When people were telling me that “everyone does hair,” my parents told me that I had something different and to continue fighting for what I believed was needed in the community. My family has always shown tough love. We just don’t cry or dwell about everything (not that there is anything wrong with crying), however, my family taught me that there is no use in crying over spilled milk because “this too shall pass.” In business, you will take losses, however, you have to keep going and learn from each mistake or loss. Always improve, never become content!

My grandfather owned his own automotive business and passed in 2006. 10 years later I started my own company. Now that I have my own business, I wish I could sit with my grandfather and ask how he survived all those years in business. My grandparents were special to me and I lost my grandfather due to Leukemia. It all happened so sudden and I did not get that time with him to comfort him during his battle with cancer. Starting this business, I have met so many individuals fighting and beating cancer. I am truly grateful that they have allowed me to be of assistance to them during this time in their life, and in a way, it gives me closure.
