Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Brown.
Jackie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I first started working out, I had no intention of creating a habit out of it or beginning a new career path. My best friend at the time wanted to do fitness competitions, and she would drag me to the gym with her for accountability. As time went on, I realized that the time I spent working out was the only time I was truly happy. I was struggling with depression because I hated the college I was attending, my grades were slipping, and I felt like I didn’t have any real friends. The weights were my therapist. Instead of locking myself in my room to sip wine and write depressing poetry, I started working out to release my inner demons. It became a lot more about feeling strong on the INSIDE rather than just the outside, and I was able to learn that the two do go hand in hand. As my body and mindset became stronger, the people around me began to notice. My energy was contagious, and I began to inspire a lot of people around me. Once I could see the type of positive impact that I had over my peers, I knew that I wanted my influence to spread. When I was at rock bottom, I didn’t have anyone in my ear telling me the things I needed to hear to get back up. I don’t want anyone else to feel that way, so I have become that voice. I dropped out of college after three years to move back to Houston and become a trainer and lifestyle coach. It was completely spontaneous, but I wouldn’t redo it for the world. Now I have clients all over the globe, and I am able to motivate people to create a healthier lifestyle on a daily basis.
Has it been a smooth road?
I always thought that the road would get smoother as I went along, but the reality is that it gets rough and tougher with each new milestone that I pass. My goals only continue to get bigger and bigger, and that requires me to work harder. I set really high expectations for myself, and sometimes that ends up hurting rather than helping because I stress myself out when I don’t reach them. What I tell myself, and what I would tell anyone else, is that you will reach your goal if you continuously outwork the person you were the day before. Take it one day at a time. It’s important not to lose sight of the present moment by being caught up in the future.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Curls & Curls story. Tell us more about it.
I am a personal trainer and lifestyle coach based in Houston, Texas, but I work with people from all over. My brand Curls & Curls has expanded like crazy this past year due to my monthly 21 Day Challenge. Every month, I host a 21-day challenge that is open to anyone. For three weeks, I coach all of my participants on how to create healthier habits and a healthier lifestyle. Since my first one in June 2018, I have had over 300 people from around the world participate! Knowing that many people have trusted me with their transformation has really motivated me to continue to be the best trainer possible. I invest a lot of time and money into a wide variety of books relating to fitness, nutrition, mental health, and motivation techniques. Any trainer can tell you what exercises to do and when, but there is no guarantee that you will do it. I pride myself on being able to take it a step further and coach my clients past what is blocking them from being motivated and disciplined.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
I don’t think that I would have decided to become a personal trainer had it not been for Massiel Arias (aka MankoFit). I started following her on Instagram when I began my fitness journey, and it was like she was with me every step of the way. I looked forward to her posts every day. I would write her quotes on Post-its to keep around my room, and I attempted almost every exercise that she shared. Being able to feel her energy through the phone is what inspired me to be just as contagious to those who came in contact with me.
I have also been inspired by my mother. She was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer when I was 13. Watching someone you love fight such a devastating disease will light a fire inside of you that you did not know was there. She was being strong for me, so I had to learn how to become my strongest for her.
