Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Bartlett.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve had an interest in mental health for as long as I can remember, which led me to study psychology in college, but becoming a therapist was not always the clear choice. Upon graduation, I decided to join Teach for America which landed me in Houston, TX working as a middle school teacher. After teaching for several years, I transitioned into a role with an education-focused non-profit that worked primarily with middle school students in the after-school hours. Through these experiences, I continually witnessed the transformative power of genuine connection and relationships, which ignited my passion for counseling and motivated me to begin working towards my graduate degree.
Upon completing a Master’s of Education in Counseling at the University of St. Thomas, I moved to New York City where I worked at a residential facility supporting adults who have a history of homelessness and mental illness. I worked directly with individuals diagnosed with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, survivors of trauma and individuals living with chronic illnesses, among other issues. After several years, I transitioned back to Houston and am continuing my work as a therapist in private practice. Each of these experiences have come with unique rewards and challenges, but all have furthered my passion to continue to advocate for and normalize the conversation around therapy and mental health.
Has it been a smooth road?
My path to becoming a therapist was definitely not linear, and it took exploring multiple roads, sometimes pivoting and sometimes changing completely, to get to where I am today. There were many times I felt like I actually had no clue where to go next! It’s easy to succumb to the narrative that we have to have all the answers and a detailed plan for each phase of our life, but that’s just not reality. Over time, I learned to approach each misstep as an opportunity to learn new information, both about myself and my direction and began to recognize that knowing which path isn’t a good fit is just as valuable as identifying the better one.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am passionate about women’s issues – both in out and of the mental health field – and am especially interested in working with young adult and millennial women attempting to navigate the unique social pressures and challenges associated with this life stage. I am also eager to partner with clients on issues such as finding balance in your personal and professional life, establishing boundaries, developing healthy self-care practices and those seeking relief from anxiety.
My collection of experiences, post-graduate training in integrative trauma care and trauma-informed practices, and years of working directly with adults who have experienced a variety of traumas (including sexual abuse, medical trauma, domestic violence, etc.) have given me a passion for working with survivors of such trauma. Through my work, I am committed to helping those affected by trauma to feel empowered and begin to heal. I also have a strong appreciation and interest in the mind-body connection and plan to continue to deepen my knowledge of holistic treatment modalities.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
There are way too many to name! I reference Kristin Neff’s book, Self-Compassion, on almost a daily basis at work and it has been a huge influence in my own life. I’m also loving Lori Gottlieb’s recent book, Maybe you Should Talk to Someone. It’s entertaining, thought-provoking, and shines a light on what therapy is actually like as both a therapist and client.
