Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Lowe-Wang.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began my journey with hair as far back as an intermediate school. For me, that was 6th grade. I remember my first school dance, I was the friend who volunteered to do everyones hair for the big night. Everyone gathered at my house. From there on, every school dance I was the stylist. Even in middle school when I was grounded from the homecoming dance, my mom allowed me to style a couple of classmates. Going into high school, I still had a deep passion for the beauty industry. Hair, makeup, runway, you name it. The high school I went to had the option for cosmetology as an elective. My dad, the sweet, old school heart of his told me that I wouldn’t succeed in that industry. He wanted me to become a nurse or doctor. Medical field was what he preferred. Two years in high school, I was enrolled in HOSA (health occupations students of America) It was interesting and I loved learning about all of it. I graduated and went straight into cosmetology. Six weeks in, I quite. I moved out and began doing what I thought an 18 year old was good at doing. Adulating. I was sadly mistaken as that came to end quicker than I wanted it to. I moved home and in the meantime I began bartending.
A few years later, I went back to cosmetology school and finally graduated. Years went by and I was still in the hospitality industry. I loved every bit of it. After all, Houston is best known for food and cocktails. My last gig creating cocktails was 6 months before I met the love of my life. During those six months, I was working nights and was given the opportunity to work for one of the most respected salons in the city, in which I was able to learn from the best of the best. This was my dream job. I soon quit the night industry and gave my full heart to hair. Thanks to my wonderful husband and family who supported me through it all. After a year, I didn’t think I was a good fit for that salon. I left and went back to knowing what I did best. Hair. I turned the first floor of our townhouse into a studio. Flowe studio is what we named it. Collaborated with my husband to create this concept. Four months went by and I was basically forced to move out of the house into something much bigger. December 2016, I opened my first Salon. We currently, have been open for a year and a half, with bigger projects in the works. Im still to this day floored at the growth of my career. I surely believe God and lots of hard work has something to do with it.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a new business owner has to be the hardest thing I’ve done thus far. Surrounding your circle with successful people is fuel to the fire. When first starting off, you need to have the hustle mentality. Work your name through all sources. If to you, that’s social media, make that your full-time job. If you feel like going door to door then do that until you no longer need to introduce yourself.
Whatever you do, do it well and be consistent. You will see the change! For those looking to start their own business, know you will face challenges and disappointments. Don’t let that stop you from working hard, make that your motivation to push even harder. Take all opportunities as a lesson learned and a stepping stone into a stronger version of yourself. Owning your own business isn’t for everyone. There is more to it than you think, and honestly, I don’t know all of it. I’m always learning.
I think owning a business is a risk worth taking. If you feel it in your heart to do that, then go for it! Always remember to work hard, surround yourself with like-minded individuals and be consistent.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Flowe Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
Aside from making people look and feel beautiful, I enjoy the intimate part of being behind the chair. Hospitality is an important part of my business. I want my clients to feel as if they are coming to relax at my house for a couple of hours while sipping some wine. I love when my clients can lean on me for advice, blow off steam from a hard day at work or just simply talk about how parenting wasn’t easy for them that day. My whole team of four talented women works well to create more than just a salon experience. We strongly stand by our philosophy at Flowe; our client’s comfort comes first and everything else falls into place.
Since opening the salon, I’m proud of the fact that we’ve created a space for our city and most importantly the neighborhood we are in. We’ve built a culture of excellence in ALL that we do and we hope it continues to permeate through each client that walks through our door.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I feel like the biggest barrier for female leaders today is not focusing on what makes them unique. Most of us surround ourselves with social media which is fine, but I feel like it can be detrimental to building someone’s career. Being female, we carry more feelings than the average male. A lot more emotion is involved which can distract us from our own identity. We start comparing ourselves to others; ” Well look how successful she’s doing and she just started her business 6 months ago.” or ” Why can’t my business be as creative as hers?” We’ve all been there at some point. In the beauty industry, we are fortunate to have a large number of female owners, leaders and role models. I believe we should all take a step back and realize how strong we can all be if we work together and look up to each other. The more we continue to expose each other in this positive light, the brighter we all will be.
