Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Alonso.
Maria, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Makeup artist, beauty, fashion, mother and wife. In my early 20s, I start doing my friend’s makeup and sharing images with product details. Gaining clients, friends of friends! Creating my Makeup/Fashion and beauty page on social media has given me the opportunity to grow. And encourage women to do it all.
My husband and I drive around Downtown/Houston on the weekends with our two babies. To find beautiful murals or even random place, sharing, creating, and inspiring with my style. Creating a fashion looks and capture a good image that can inspire others.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Hasn’t been easy but not impossible, with lots of stops and bumps along the road but I Believe it’s part of the growth. Last year, I had my 2nd baby in January. And recovering after a pregnancy can be very overwhelming. But I focused on both things, being a mother and my career. Started dressing up again, working again as a Makeup Artist and that help me with my self-esteem. The best advice I can give to young and all women, never stop dreaming, it’s a daily reminder to your own self. Most importantly, originality and passionate. Enjoy the journey, love what you create and never stop learning.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I work as a self-taught Makeup Artist. Maryybeauty is my brand, part of my dream. My work consists of enhancing women’s natural beauty. With a touch of Glamour. Making them feel extra glam but yet feeling confident and comfortable in their own skin. Since day one, my goal always has been working with what makes my client happy. With new products and new trends. Making sure I give them the right treatment. Getting to know them and their skin type with simple questions. Like do you wear moisturizer, foundation, if so which one/do you wear lashes? Questions that make such a huge difference on a Makeup Appointment.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Barriers will always exist but it’s up to us if we break those barriers and lead in the industry. Us, women have shown we can do it all. As a Latina, I believe we have proven. We can be leaders, Mothers, Entrepreneur, and create a positive impact in our community.
