Today we’d like to introduce you to Randee Shields.
Randee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve spent the past five years nurturing my family and designing handmade linen apparel for my Etsy shop, Shields Design House. This shop allowed me to be creative and grow in ways that can be difficult for a stay-at-home mom.
Over the last two years, I also began working with First Models & Talent as a commercial model and actress. This work satisfies my love for performing arts and introduced me to the vast creative community Houston has to offer. However, life recently threw me a curveball. The type of curveball that cracks your world wide-open and forces you to rebuild.
On May 1st I lost my mother to stage 4 liver disease. I knew almost immediately I couldn’t go back to running my Etsy shop. I was called to do something more. And this call was answered by Medella Sciences – a company imagined by two women pharmacists with a passion for natural health and wellness. Two women who recognized a need for natural options that are sourced and produced with the highest of standards. Their full spectrum hemp oil extract line, Cannaba RX, can be found in over 150 stores and pharmacies and is soon moving its operations here to Houston. For many, this THC-free line offers solutions to a wide range of problems without the cost our bodies pay to process synthetic products. And for this reason, I am honored to forge a new path for myself and this incredible company.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had many bumps in the road – most stemmed from keeping my vision too narrow. Taking a moment to consider what impact your choices will have in 2-5 years is a helpful way to keep the big picture in mind and make sure you are always moving in a direction that makes you happy. And when you’re not, be brave enough to make a change.
What should we know about Medella Sciences? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Medella Sciences professional grade CBD line, Cannaba RX, is very special in that it is truly THC-free. Many companies make this claim despite their oil containing .3% THC – enough to result in a positive drug test. Our oil, however, is produced using a proprietary process that removes all THC, while keeping the plants terpenes and other cannabinoids intact. This allows for the “entourage effect” that makes full plant extracts so sought after. This line also includes a Cream for arthritis and skin conditions, along with a Gel roller that is especially effective for deep muscle and joint pain. In addition to the RX products, Medella Sciences recently introduced their Cannaba Naturals line that includes a lotion, body wash, bar soap, salve and lip balm, making it easy to incorporate the benefits of CBD into your everyday routine.
My role in all of this includes everything from product development to packaging orders, as well as educating consumers about the benefits of these amazing products.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
With social media and online marketplaces like Etsy, there is an opportunity for small business to grow like never before. And although this isn’t the right route for everyone and every product – it did allow me to continue learning and contribute financially for many years while still getting to spend every day with my children. For women who don’t want to put their entire life on hold while raising their kids, I think this is an amazing option.
