Conversations with the Inspiring Sierra Nicole

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Nicole.

Sierra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to Houston, Tx in 2013 and began pursuing my B.A. in broadcast journalism w/ a minor in business at the University of Houston. I fell in love with sports media when I earn an internship in the Athletics Communications office at UH. During my time interning there, I represented my university in roles at Men’s Final Four, Super Bowl LI, NBA, NFL Network and more. I graduated from UH in Spring 2017.

I attended my first NABJ convention in August of 2017 and it was very beneficial as far as networking and learning new things. I have attended every year since it plays a big part in making and keeping good connections for future jobs.

I took a semester off and began grad school in Spring 2018 at Texas Southern University. During my time there, I received my first on-air contract with AT&T Sports net SW as a sideline reporter for TSU Basketball and Football. I will receive my master’s degree in Radio, Television and film this summer 2020.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to success is never easy in my opinion. It comes with the territory. In the beginning, I struggled with changing the way I talk and always having clothes that covered my tattoos. I struggled with time management and how important it was to make time for rest and self-care. I wanted the career so bad I neglected taking care of my self.

In 2016 I had accepted a role to represent my university at the Men’s Final Four. The week of I got a call to work with the pre-production team on ESPN’s Mike & Mike, obviously, I couldn’t say no lol. So the longest day I ever had in my life happened. I was on set with ESPN from 2 am-noon and had to be at NRG Stadium at 1pm. All I had time to do was change clothes and eat a sandwich. I was at NRG from 1pm-midnight. I was so exhausted I couldn’t even drive home & at the time I lived right across the street. I had to call my roommate to come and drive me home, I was so tired I was sick. IDK if anyone has ever experienced that but it’s so real.

So the advice I would give to younger women, be mindful of things that are permanent in life when making decisions. Make your own opportunities, don’t change yourself find platforms and opportunities that accept you for who you are. There is a lane for everyone and if there isn’t, create it.

What should we know about SiMiTV (see-me-tee-vee)? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a sports journalist who specializes in getting the story beyond the game. I am most proud of the versatility my brand has. I have not only done sports but entertainment as well. I also write, shoot and edit. I believe what sets me apart from others is my unique delivery and the comfortability and trust I give others. My first book, #SportsBae, is set to release this summer. I am very excited and proud to be able to be versatile in my work.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My mother has inspired me the most. My mother works in the criminal justice field. Her work ethic and determination throughout my childhood made me the woman I am today. My mom has always taught me to never dwell on the past or things that I can’t control. No matter what, you must move forward and upward.
