Today we’d like to introduce you to Val Ross.
Hi Val, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Honestly, it just fell into my life. At the time, I had just lost my job as an environmental toxicologist. When I started looking for work, I felt as though my strongest skill set at the time was my teaching experience. You see, I have a real knack for being able to create and deliver information to individuals. Unfortunately, my employment loss was in the middle of the school year and there were little to no other jobs available within my specific field. Well, with no employment it meant no income for me so I fell on really, REALLY HARD times as many people do… and with a child depending on me I was forced to reevaluate life. What were my strengths? Weaknesses? What was I passionate about? The beauty industry makeup industry was a part of my initial loves in life. Fast forward, as I continued to look for solid and stable work, I slowly started to establish stability in my life with the help of close friends and family. I would “part-time” myself by providing various makeup services that ranged from full-face applications to eyelash extensions. During the time of “part timing” myself, my makeup style, more specifically how I would sculpt brows became my signature look so I continued to expand my knowledge base in that area… brows! I became educated in various techniques such as eyebrow tinting which eventually led me dnw the path to micro-blading. From there, I continued to experiment with different forms of beauty and training with brows and lashes, which lead me to create and provide my signature tinted brows on a more semi-permanent basis to clients. Voila… here I am today!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everything in life comes with some challenges and obstacles along the way. Entrepreneurship and figuring out your purpose and passion is no different. For me, it is still a learning process as I navigate how to bring my clients the best and safest semi-permanent make up while scaling my business to become and remain profitable. Although I show true transparency with my clients and students, I am very shy so being able to put myself out there for business purposes… I can get in my own way by overthinking. Take this interview for example, I was elated to have been considered for this amazing opportunity but in the same breath, I was sooooo nervous about what I would say and if I would be able to express myself clearly while trying to articulate my love and passion so it can be understood and received well.

I am a Brow artist, extraordinaire! I specialize in brow tinting, microblading, micro shading /ombre, and the infamous METIER MIX which are microbladed brow techniques that I personally created. My passion for creating and teaching kicked itself into high gear as I developed my knowledge and skills within this beauty field. I found something that hadn’t been done before and worked diligently to create the perfect combination of techniques that my clients would come to love! I am known for the METIER Mix and have trained hundreds of brow and beauty professionals in the Houston area (as well as many out of town/state individuals) on the art of this specific SPMU technique.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Never stop learning! Everything in life continues to change, so we have to continue to adapt and be an option for that shift. Although I have my own technique, I continue to explore the field of beauty and listen to my clients to learn what they want while rendering an aesthetic that will last no matter what “trends” are hot now.
