Conversations with Aerial Lange

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aerial Lange.

Hi aerial, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I make symbolic art through subjects such as medical/plant science, psychology, & spirituality. Using charcoal & pastel pencils mainly, but on occasion adding acrylic, ink pen, & watercolor. Exploring an intersection of these subjects feels like unchartered territory. Through these subjects I relate them back to life to make the viewer question themselves & the world around them. I’ve been able to test these pieces through the public by doing markets in Lafayette, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, & a couple in Houston. With the meanings of my pieces, I put on the back of prints & use as my sales pitch during markets. Which allows me to also relate & connect with such a huge variety of people. Teaching me not only about myself & art but also about the world around me which flows back into my art. Prioritizing the meanings allows this exchange to feel less transactional & much more meaningful. Now I’m venturing into being in more exhibits (2 big ones as of recently), stores, expanding my product store & still plan to keep doing markets since it fuels so much of my passion. All 3 of the subjects listed above are special interests that have followed me my whole life & using them as a way to communicate through my art just always felt right & i think that’s why it works. It’s true to myself & each peice is filled with so much authenticity because staying true to myself has always been my top rule.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I started the business side of my craft in 2020 in the midst of the chaos that was the covid 19 pandemic. All I know to work in & around is chaos which actually is how art has always stayed in my life since a young child. It has literally & figuratively always been my escape from & through the chaos. I think how you percieve failure or an obstacle in your art journey determines heavily the outcomes & how far you go. If our achievements are only measured by the amount of transactions then we’ve lost the plot. Artists bring an unnoticed & unappreciated service to society. A service to make you feel, question, and observe what would otherwise go ignored. To me, seeing the value I bring to the world past monetary value allows me to see the bigger picture of what I can accomplish. This deep introspection has always given me insight to how to keep my passion of art as authentic as possible wihtout sacrificing it for a buck. That will probably always be a struggle I try to balance constantly.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in charcoal & pastel pencils but if a vision of a piece calls for acrylic, ink, or watercolor then that also can end up there. Anything to make the vision in my head. The subjects I like to work most with are medical/plant science, psychology, & spirituality. Subjects that are often seperated so combining them feels like uncharted territory. I combine these subjects to reveal lessons about oneself or life. These special interests have followed me my whole life just like art so to use them as a tool of communication through my art which feels very true to me. I’m most proud of how I have the ability to get people to feel parts of themselves they often try to hide while also delivering a healing message to give them solace. The fact I’ve been referred to by my art in this manner from others feels like such an accomplishment that my art can take on a life of its own, something bigger than myself. Especially when these messages comes from parts of myself I try to hide as well. But i also heal through these encounters which creates a beauitful full circle.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
If anyone out there would like to experience these same meanings I have my portfolio & store set up to where every piece has the meaning attached somewhere. I also do custom commissions that include equal amount of love & energy as my own pieces. I’m also releasing more products than ever such as, my first coloring book, postcards, bookmarks, & more in the future. You can also find prints, stickers, & originals on my online storefront as well. To stay up to date on my journey I am active on all socials by @aerialsartistry.
