Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Lauter.
Hi Alex, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It’s a pleasure to be back on Voyage Magazine since the last article from 2018 – so much has happened & I’m honored & excited to share all the updates & new adventures.
To read everything that’s happened so far & my background, check out that article here; https://voyagehouston.com/interview/check-alex-lauters-artwork/.
Since founding the Record Label Lauterhaus back in 2018, we’ve now had 43 releases, multiple sold-out events around the city, & have built a proper foundation & community for what I believe represents House Music in the Houston Electronic Music scene. However, reaching that point wasn’t easy.
Continuing the grind all of 2018 & 2019, finding new talent & artists emerging in the scene, spending hundreds of hours in the studio with many of them & playing a role in developing their brands was something I realized I always wanted to do – & I’m so grateful for all the guys now who have released music on Lauterhaus & trusted me with the distribution & handling of their music. It was when the world had shut down last year in March 2020, & nobody knew what direction their life was going in, we decided to just keep focusing on the music, & put out some EPs that started charting heavily on Beatport, the iTunes of Dance Music. From Call of Duty sessions with all the boys in lockdown to sending music back & forth constantly, 2020 was a defining year in the music we put out & I believe that is when the Houston scene truly started noticing that we were just a bunch of people who cared about spreading love & unity through the messages in our music.
One of the artists & good friends on the label, Jacob Xilla, also introduced me to other friends in the scene who were not able to tour at the moment but were heavily involved in Visual projections & artwork. It wasn’t long before we were hosting weekly intimate livestreams at the new place to hang, the “Sweespa”, where Kilian, aka The Photon Samurai, converted the house into an incredible music studio with projections set up & mapped throughout the entire house. Having just gotten back touring seasons with Jauz & Jai Wolf, Kilian had a lot to teach me about any matter along my journey to becoming an established music producer & artist. That was when I realized it truly took a big team to build the vision I had with the label & I was grateful to be spending & learning so much from such experienced & seasoned warriors in the music industry.
Having moved into a beautiful loft with my girlfriend Jessica in September 2020 with a gorgeous view right in front of Downtown, I was so happy to be somewhere so central in the city & continue developing what we were building, regardless of what was going on in the world. My friend Jonathan Barragan, who has been on this journey since day 1, also filmed the first documentary we put out under his new alias “MATTE TERRA” – check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O8_JeebjvQ
In October 2020, we hosted one of the first events back in town, and with full safety measures, at the Houston Fan Tavern – converting an iconic venue right across the street from the Minute Maid Park into an underground warehouse. It felt so amazing to be uniting people again, & eventually led to a residency at Bauhaus for the remainder of the year, one of the first venues to open up again in the city as well.
For the 3 Year Lauterhaus Anniversary event, which was on April 10. 2021, we rented out the Sanman studios, and brought in full production crew. Seeing massive projections & visuals at the event & the amount of people who came to support, truly opened my eyes to what we had created & manifested within only 3 years, & realized that my dream had come true. It’s only thanks to all of my friends & family who continue believing in what I’m building & having faith, that I’m positive the label will only keep evolving & growing on a much bigger scale.
This year in May 2021, Neon Instruments & I also released a heavier hitting EP with a new experimental sound we’ve been defining for over a year, the “Let Me Go” EP, which now sits at over 50k streams & is without a doubt one of the most unique & genre-defying pieces of work we’ve ever put out, definitely go listen to it.
One of the artists on Lauterhaus & my good friend James Gary had just recently performed on a massive stage at the Freaky Deaky Festival October 29, 2021, & hearing him play all of our music on a big system was mind-blowing as well – it’s a beautiful community & team we’ve built & every day I’m grateful to have these people in my life.
For now, the focus is to keep pushing out good music, & continue organizing events that will only keep growing bigger & keep bringing more people together on the frequency & vibration of love. Hope to see you out at a party soon!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest struggle was staying focused on my path every day, even when the world was shutting down around us, knowing that what we are building has immense value to society in the form of community & the magic of music.
Building a sustainable career in the music industry, but with the right mindset, network, & attitude, it can be done, it just takes some time, as does everything else in life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a music producer & audio engineer, I now work out of the Band Barracks studios – Curran, the founder of Band Barracks, was actually the one who recommend me to Voyage Houston again!
I specialize in audio recording, mixing & mastering work, & running all the business logistics for Lauterhaus as well. To book me just reach out to me on Instagram or Facebook & we can get started on perfecting your projects right away!
What I’m most proud of is sticking to my goals & dreams, which are now coming true since the last Voyage Houston article, & excited to see where the journey continues to take me.
