Conversations with Alicia Stevens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Stevens.

Hi Alicia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a graduate of Texas Southern University. I majored in Theatre. My official degree is BFA-Theatre Performance. Since graduating I have been in a local commercial, on local television, professional theatre, short films and primarily worked as a stand-up comic. I’ve hosted several open mics and performed consistently for the better part of the last 13 years. I started acting at 7 years old during the Ensemble Theatre’s Young Performers summer program.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No. I’ve had to deal with the disappointment of not being cast, not being paid on time, not being paid at all, being scammed on auditions for script access, assaulted while performing onstage. I wouldn’t trade the life experience for anything however. I’ve gained so many friends that have helped me understand my gift and how to thrive in my craft. I’ve had to deal with performing after losing people in my life and even other comics. Pushing through to make others laugh while you’re heartbroken inside is o e of the most grueling skills to master.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My act is mostly true to my life experiences. I am an observer of other, but specifically from the pov of a Black woman/mother in Texas. Im most proud of being able to navigate and still stay relevant in the comedy community. What sets me apart is my resilience. I’ve had to pivot a few times and take care of my personal life, it I’ve always managed to remain consistent.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love our camaraderie, Houston is so diverse and we all can come together at a moments notice for literally anything. From faithfully cheering on the Texans to becoming supersleuths tracking down our collectively imagined Bayou Butcher. Everyone here is a celebrity in their own right. The thing I dislike the most would have to be our lack of proper mass transit and the toll it takes on our ability to traverse the city safely.
