Conversations with Alyssa Mays-Sawyer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Mays-Sawyer.

Hi Alyssa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up, I was always very ambitious and very active. I loved to be involved in as many school activities, or events with friends that I could. Once I got a little older and it was time to create my own life, I went hard for everything I wanted. I was very young and I worked 3 jobs and went to college to make sure I was on the right track to getting the life I wanted. Little did I know, that life was nothing I wanted. I had NO time to myself, constantly working or doing schoolwork. It caused a lot of unfortunate things to happen in life and for me to lose track of myself. Once I got myself back, I still worked hard everyday but instead had a new journey of trying to figure out where I was going in life and what I wanted out of it. A couple of months after one of the worst periods of my life, I connected with my now husband, Robert.

Robert and I had been friends for a couple of years, we met when a friend of mine was getting a tattoo by him. I was actually in a relationship when we met so we never took time to get to know each other then. Once we reconnected, I was single and honestly it was one of the best things to happen in my life. Robert is seriously a one of a kind person I never knew I needed. I learned so much from him that helped me understand my life and all that life had to offer. The same way he learned from me. I feel like my experiences with Robert helped me become the person I am and always wanted to be. I received the unconditional love and support from him that helped me finally create a path of my own. We’ve always been together in everything we do, but still separate people with different lives.

About 2 years after being together; understanding, learning and experiencing each other through love, travel, family, etc. we started doing YouTube. We would go places and people would be like “Hey, do you guys do YouTube? You look like YouTubers” Since we heard it so much even on vacations, we said “why not” Let’s try it! Once we started we thankfully had a lot of support from people in our hometown and from there we just had to figure a way to get more global. We worked very very hard and even invested in traveling places to meet people to network with us. Eventually, we got a great opportunity to be involved in a big YouTube show.

We used the opportunity to finally move out of our hometown, which we always wanted to do, and come to a place much more beneficial for us and our kids. We sold EVERYTHING we owned in our hometown to start over. From houses, to properties, to everything in our house. We got in the car and hopped on the road. For a small moment, we had to be without our kids, which if you know us you know our kids are with us everyday all day, and it was difficult. So we ended up bringing them with us sooner than expected. We were in a house for the YouTube show and we’re cramped in a room with the kids because they are the most important to us and it didn’t feel right leaving them during.

Of course, there were hard some days, a lot of things people don’t know we put up with. Youtube is a COMPLETELY different lifestyle. I mean all around, every aspect. But we got through it as a family, the only way we know how. Time and time again, we’re shown that family is all we got! Ever since we finished the show, we quickly got our own life started here in Texas. Due to people hard working type of people my husband and I are internally, we ALWAYS strive to be better. We meet a lot of goals we set and are very blessed. We are ALWAYS helping people as much as we can, and we love that we are able to do so! Which I think is why we are so blessed.

In the most humble way, I have not experienced another couple like us. Our faith, connection, bond and understanding of each other and life as brought us so far and continues to grow. We knock down any obstacle in our way together and graciously. We are excited to see where we will be in a year or two from now!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s never been a smooth road. Maybe a little less bumpy for a couple of miles, but there are always roadblocks. That’s okay though! That’s how we know we are doing what we are supposed to. We know it’s something worth fighting for and that’s what we’re doing. We also, constantly adapt to our supporters and what they like to see but still remaining us. Which frequent change can be a hard struggle for a lot of people.

Some other struggles we’ve dealt with include learning who to be involved with, learning who has your BEST interest at heart. We are very loving, kind, faithful people and we know when someone isn’t right for us. Which is okay too! Not everyone is meant to be for you. Protecting your energy and yourself is very important. Things like YouTube and social media alone can really change a person. Not always in the best of ways, but we know that before social media we are human. We are still who we are inside and out. We are the same people you watch on YouTube as the people you meet in person. Always real and authentic.

We had to get through struggles such as maybe losing people we thought were good for us. Struggles like making life-changing decisions (i.e. moving across the country with no family or friends around us). Struggles like investing money into things only for them to fail us. Struggles like sacrificing our time with each other some days to work hours on end. And many, many more that I won’t go into right now. Though, with each struggle, we come out better than before. With new knowledge and understanding of things. If it’s not a blessing is a lesson.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a YouTuber & social media influencer. I have a couples channel with my husband, Robert; and a family channel with my son King, step-son Robert III, and husband. I’m currently pregnant and expecting our baby girl! My specialty is recording pranks on my family, as well as vlogs and things of that sort. I’m known for my YouTube videos with my family and making people laugh! I’m most proud of the business my family and I have created. Nothing is better than having fun everyday with your family for a living! What sets me apart from others is how compassionate, humble and hard-working I am. My mindset to always push through and never hold onto things that hold you back. Also, no matter how much I learn I’m always looking to learn more!

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First, our supporters deserve all the credit for always supporting us and letting us create a family with them too. Also, a handful of YouTubers, both small scale and very large scale, who we have worked with, became friends with, and gotten a chance to learn from. In both work and personal lifestyles.
