Conversations with Ayana M’ary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayana M’ary.

Hi Ayana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in March of 2002 in New Orleans, a city with rich history, undeniable character, and a prominent artistic scene. Hurricane Katrina destroyed everything we had, and my family and I were forced to relocate. We built a new living for ourselves in the city of Houston. Houston, like New Orleans, is also filled with talented, iconic individuals and landmarks full of ingenuity. At a young age, I looked to these examples for inspiration and encouragement. I started my creative journey at a very young age by painting and drawing. I was praised for my talent and skill, and that encouraged me to keep going. My interest in the fashion industry began at 8, and in fourth grade, I began sewing and designing for the first time. My grandmothers helped me get started, and I taught myself a lot on my own through research, pattern instructions, and, eventually, pattern-making. I took advanced fashion design courses from middle school to all four years of high school. Seeing the fruit of my labor encouraged me to keep going. Designing gave me a smooth transition into the world of modeling. I learned the fundamentals and quickly skyrocketed into a new world of possibilities. Not only have I had my own designs showcased, but I have also gotten the opportunity to walk in countless fashion shows and productions across the U.S. I am extremely thankful for all the blessings and opportunities that have come my way and am looking forward to the bright future that lies ahead of me.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
For the most part, it was. In the very beginning of me starting my modeling journey, I struggled with certainty in my path. Looking back at myself several years ago, I remember questioning whether I was going to the right path or if I was doing things the way they needed to be done. What flipped the switch was me realizing, truly realizing, that I am perfectly made in God’s image. There is only one of me. What’s for me will always be for me. I fell in love with everything about myself; the way I look, the way I move, the way I dance, the way I walk, the way I smile; the way I laugh. I am blessed to be Ayana, and I am so grateful that God showed me who I truly am, inside and out.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I primarily model. I am also a college student, so my time is split between my studies and modeling. I have a lot of experience in runway, but my portfolio is growing in editorial/commercial work as well. Among all my shoots, I am the most proud of the photos I had complete photographic and creative control over. They are a testament to my creativity and ability to not only be a muse but also be behind the camera, clothes, and idea. What sets me apart from other models is my energy. Every model is unique in his or her own way. My way is that I have a naturally graceful and elegant energy on the runway, as described to me by several creatives I have worked with. However, I am versatile and can switch up my walk depending on the type of show I’m walking for.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the creativity and innovation birthed in our city. From the famous “Be Someone” to the beautiful works held within our Museum District, Houston is a place where artists of all types flourish. Expression is encouraged, and new ideas are nurtured. I always feel so inspired after networking or discover new places downtown. What I like least about Houston is the traffic. I can say with surety that I am not alone in this thought; however, Houston has so many amazing assets that far outweigh the bad.
