Conversations with Ayodeji Mohammed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayodeji Mohammed.

Hi Ayodeji, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into cake artistry began with my son’s birthdays. For his third birthday, I ordered a custom cake, but when I saw the finished product, I knew it wasn’t quite what I had envisioned. While I appreciated the effort that went into it, I walked away thinking, “I wonder if I could make his next birthday cake myself.” So, for his fourth birthday, I decided to take on the challenge. That one decision completely changed the direction of my life.

At the time, I loved baking, but I had never decorated cakes. After making that first cake in 2018, a few friends asked who had created it. When I told them I had, one of them trusted me enough to place my very first paid order. To say I was nervous would be an understatement. Someone was trusting me with their special occasion, and I felt the weight of that responsibility. Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful she took a chance on me because that single order launched what has become SunshyneMoh Bake Shoppe.

Like many entrepreneurs, the journey hasn’t been linear. There have been moments of self-doubt, techniques that took months to master, and challenges that made me question whether I was capable. But every obstacle became an opportunity to grow. One of my biggest milestones was learning to work with chocolate ganache, a skill that took me well over a year to develop. Today, one of the most rewarding parts of my journey is that I now teach other bakers the very technique that once felt impossible for me.

Today, SunshyneMoh Bake Shoppe has grown into more than a luxury cake business. While I still love designing elegant cakes that are as unforgettable in flavor as they are in appearance, I’m also passionate about helping other bakers succeed. Through hands-on cake decorating classes and educational resources I’m developing, including resources designed to help bakers price their work with confidence, my goal is to equip fellow cake artists with both the creative and business skills they need to build sustainable, profitable businesses.

Looking back, it’s incredible to think that what started as a desire to create a better birthday cake for my son has grown into a business I never imagined. Today, I have the privilege of creating cakes that become part of some of life’s most meaningful celebrations, teaching aspiring bakers, and developing resources that empower other bakers to build thriving businesses. I’m excited to continue growing as a luxury cake artist, educator, and entrepreneur, and I can’t wait to see where this journey leads next.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. In fact, one of the biggest surprises was realizing that learning to decorate cakes was only one small part of building a successful cake business.

I’ve had to learn everything from mastering techniques like chocolate ganache and achieving sharp, clean finishes to pricing my work, marketing my business, attracting clients, and building systems that allow my business to grow sustainably. Every new level seemed to bring a new challenge to overcome.

There were moments when I questioned whether I was good enough or whether I could really make this work. Some techniques took months, and in some cases, well over a year to master. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve also experienced slower seasons that tested my patience and reminded me that building a business requires perseverance just as much as talent.

Looking back, I’m grateful for every challenge because each one has made me stronger. They’ve taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of never stopping the learning process. Today, I don’t see obstacles as reasons to quit. I see them as opportunities to improve. Every challenge has shaped me into a better cake artist, educator, and entrepreneur.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a luxury cake artist, educator, and entrepreneur with a passion for creating cakes that become part of some of life’s most meaningful celebrations.

I believe every cake should be just as unforgettable in flavor as it is in design. Beautiful and delicious should never be an either-or. My clients deserve both.

As my business has evolved, so has my passion. In addition to creating custom cakes, I now teach cake decorating classes and develop educational resources for bakers. One area I’m especially passionate about is helping fellow cake artists build profitable businesses by creating resources that simplify pricing and help them price their work with confidence.

What I’m most proud of isn’t one particular cake. It’s my growth. I’m proud that I kept showing up, even when progress felt slow. Looking back, one of my proudest moments is realizing that I’m now teaching techniques that once took me over a year to learn myself.

I also love pushing myself creatively. I’m constantly exploring new techniques and artistic concepts because I want every cake to feel thoughtful, distinctive, and unforgettable. If I can create something that leaves a lasting impression while also inspiring another baker to believe in themselves, then I’ve done something meaningful.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success is about growth, perseverance, and impact.

Of course, I believe it’s important to build a profitable business because profitability creates opportunities and gives you the freedom to continue doing what you love. But I don’t believe success is measured by income alone.

I believe success is accomplishing what you set out to do, continuing to move forward even when the journey is difficult, and becoming better with every challenge you overcome. Some of my greatest lessons have come during seasons that didn’t go according to plan. Those moments taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of trusting the process.

Success is also about the lives we touch along the way. One of the greatest joys in my journey has been encouraging and teaching other bakers. I want to be the person for someone else that I wish I’d had when I was starting out, someone who offers encouragement, shares knowledge generously, and reminds them that they are capable of more than they think.

If I’ve created something meaningful, helped someone grow in confidence, or inspired them to keep going when they wanted to quit, then I consider that a successful life.
