Conversations with Brea Aikens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brea Aikens.

Hi Brea, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As a little girl, I was exposed to the beauty world at a young age. I watched my grandmother put on makeup just about every day. I have competed and won in local pageants back in my hometown of Gonzales, Louisiana, and also did competitive cheer and danced so makeup was a part of our look. Once I got into my teen years it was weird that I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup because my grandmother always said it would ruin my natural beauty lol. It’s funny how everything comes full circle because the very thing I wasn’t allowed to do is basically what pays my bills. I am currently in nursing school and hope to one day merge my love of nursing and makeup to become an Aesthetic Nurse and educate others.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For a long time, I was scared to take the leap of faith and do makeup full time. With the help of my very good friend Bree, I went full time with makeup back in August in Louisiana. I quit my job and put all my trust into God and He hasn’t let me down yet. Now that I have relocated to a new state, it is like I am back to square one. I have always loved the security of a steady paycheck, but I have never found happiness in those jobs. Houston is such a different ball game for creatives so I feel scared sometimes, but I also know that I can make it out here. I have a 3-year-old so my mindset is that I can’t fail. I have to make a way for him and show him that I can do it. Recently I have found a new space to work in to go full time again so I am super excited about that. Makeup is my passion. Even though I am no longer based in Louisiana, I still have the majority of my clients there so I travel back and forth. Sometimes I find it hard to believe I am now based in two states. That is one thing I have always envisioned for myself so it is very exciting to see my dreams start to unfold.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Bomb Aesthetics is built on enhancing everyone’s natural beauty while providing quality work in a luxe environment. I not only service those who may need makeup for the night, I service special occasions and brides as well. Travel is offered for parties of 3 or more as well as for bridal parties. I pride myself in the quality of work I provide to everyone who visits me regardless of their skin tone or ethnicity. I am a strong believer in there is always room for improvement, so I am always trying to find ways to up my game and become better. No one is ever too good to stop learning. The makeup industry is always coming out with new trends and changing, so I have to constantly research to see what’s “in” to better service my clients. Houston is big on brunching, so come see me on Sundays! I am conveniently located on Richmond Avenue near Prospect Park.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe it’s luck that keeps putting me in these positions or coming across people who want to see me win just as much as I do. I truly believe this is meant for me. No matter how many times I try to stray away or say I am “retired” I end up back working lol. I’m making a promise to myself to never stop and to keep going to reach my highest potential. It’s not about the money for me, and never was; this was meant to happen.
