Conversations with Brittany Lau

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Lau.

Hi Brittany, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always been interested in visual storytelling since I was a kid, specifically filming home videos with my family. I love to look back on memories and document the biggest or smallest moments because it transports you to another place and time, typically a fond one. It really wasn’t until high school that I developed a deeper passion for video production and filmmaking. Being exposed to the intricate process of how a video is made peaked my interest and after entering a few video contests, I was catapulted into a journey that I never looked back on. Although I have made some strides in the live entertainment field of production, I have a fondness for narrative and lifestyle content, so I still work towards creating better content in that realm to this day.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My journey into media production has definitely been a bumpy one. I’m a mostly self-taught artist, as I did not have access to the necessary resources as far as equipment and network go as I was learning. I have also come to realize the lack of diversity, specifically within live entertainment, as I commonly worked around more men than women. Admittedly, hesitation and self-doubt is probably the biggest hurdle I’ve faced in my pursuit of becoming a videographer. The challenges I’ve faced along the way may have been discouraging at times, but it only pushes me to keep moving forward to achieve my goals.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Although I delve into several avenues of communication, I would consider myself a videographer and content creator. If not for work, I am usually spending my free time editing videos in the realm of food or travel content as I have developed a passion for discovering new and unique experiences in recent years. Looking back on my journey, I am really proud of the skillset I’ve managed to build through my own passion to learn as well as the portfolio of videos I have produced over time. I feel I have a voice and perspective to share, mainly for personal creative expression, and thoroughly enjoy collaborating with others to create something beautiful.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Truthfully, I have a complicated relationship with taking risks. I hesitate on a lot of things in my life and often find it difficult to step outside of my comfort zone. However, there are those very few moments when I consider the benefits of risk taking, especially regarding my career. One of the most notable memories that come to mind is when I made the decision to leave home and study cinematography in another city. This was a big deal not just for myself but for my family too since no one in my immediate family traveled out for college. The first few months took a huge toll on me mentally and emotionally, almost pushing me to return home midway, but I found solace in my studies because the film program I was enrolled in provided such an enriching learning experience. I truly felt at ease when I was in the lecture room and although the transition was not smooth by any means, I am ultimately proud of myself for taking such a big risk because I was able to gain invaluable skills and knowledge.
