Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos & Maddy.
Hi Carlos & Maddy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Mystery Loves Company started in Houston, TX in 2012 as a duo. The unlikely pair is comprised of Maddy, a conservatory-trained cellist with a highly technical musical background, and Carlos, a self-taught guitarist from Venezuela with a passion for songwriting.
They met at an open mic where Carlos was testing out new material. Maddy was performing with a friend as a lark, but her virtuosic ability on the cello was not lost on Carlos. He engaged her at once with the proposition of collaborating on original music. Almost immediately, the two struck upon a mystifying sound, rich with natural acoustics, and laced with deeply felt sentiments regarding human struggle, safety, worth, and equality. Their captivating songs found a receptive audience in those who appreciate the art of live performance and the combination of classical and jazz instruments in a rock/folk setting. They began performing regularly around Houston, eventually touring all over Texas and the Midwest.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In this era of DYI music, it can be hard to be an artist and have to run a music business at the same time, with all that includes, such as booking, recording, financing, promotions, etc.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We write, perform, and record a mixture of rock and folk music on guitar and cello. We prefer, and particularly enjoy, the live performance and songwriting aspects of our work. We are known for our vocal harmonies and the interplay between instruments, especially in a live setting. We are most proud of the amount of work we have been able to put together of the past 13 years, with 4 full length albums and several other releases, all or mostly original music. Were also proud to have performed for all those years in 11 different states. The unique structure of our songs, the vocal harmonies, and the unconventional instrumentation tends to set us apart from others.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Find places to perform live, like open mic nights, and make connections with others in the industry in person.
