Conversations with Carolyn Rahnama

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Rahnama.

Hi Carolyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started Busy Box Child around when Covid began. Everyone I spoke to was complaining about the amount of time their child was spending on the screen for school and after either television or a tablet. Soon after with some research, I began making these fun kits, similar to what I made my children when they were much younger. I would include different kinds of toys with different textures. My children and their friends loved them so I thought I would try the market and see how it goes. I began by posting them on my social media and sending them to my favorite influencers. Everyone I sent it to LOVED it and began posting about them. I even got the attention of the media and they wanted to talk about them. The need for these sensory kits grew bigger and my company started to expand to meet the needs of customers. I started to sell my boxes as a subscription.

Our mission is to keep children off the screen.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At the beginning, it was smooth but the bigger my company got the more difficulties. My suppliers sometimes ran out of items or their shipping was slow and we had to wait weeks, sometimes months to get supplies.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a master’s in clinical psychology, and my focus is on Child’s Play. I received a lot of insight while doing my intern hours while going to different pre-schools and doing one on one play with children.

My biggest accomplishment in life is raising three smart children, and that has been the best practice with raising my kids and insight into playing with a child.

I am super creative, and I love creating things, making things beautiful and fun.

We put a lot of thought into our kits, and what sets us apart from others is that we stuff our boxes with quality toys. We are also big on including (when available) multi-cultural and multi-racial figurines because I believe that children learn about the world around them with the toys they play with. Customers often tell me about their experiences with ordering sensory kits with other subscription companies, and I am often told that other companies don’t fill their boxes the way we fill ours. Our kits are always full of toys and not fillers. For me, how much children love to play with our kits is more important than how much money I make. I hardly ever pay attention to how much a specific box will cost me and how much profit I need to make. We fill our boxes until we are happy with the way they look.

What matters most to you?
I often get DMs and emails from parents saying how long their children played with their kits and how wonderful it is that instead of handing over a tablet, they handed over a kit. That’s has always been the main goal and I love that parents are reporting back with this.

Running into parents that tell me how much these boxes have changed their parenting. Rather than putting their child in front of a screen to get things done, they give them these kits. They have reduced the amount of screen time!!
All of this is what matters!!
